Question about 1997 Ford Explorer AWD

1 Answer

1997 Ford Explorer, about once or twice a week I try to start the car. I can hear it trying to start, but it won't. This has been going on for months now. It happens more when it is 80 degrees or warmer outside. When the mechanics check the codes, everyting looks fine. Could it be the ignition switch or the crank sensor going bad??? Thanks! Michelle

Check the exhaust compression. Remove the O2 sensors before the cataylic converts and see if it improves. If it does that means your cats are cloged and need to be replaced.

I would still be thinking fuel pump. I had the same issues with a cadillac in the late 80's. The dealer had it a week. I did my own diagnostics, pulled the gas tank and installed a new pump. I assumed it bound up mechanically on occasion, and it was beyond most peoples thought process, to reason it out.

Bad sounds, bad smells from 94 ford explorer

Sounds like you may have a vacuum line off or ruptured going to the EGR valve. The burning smell is probably the catalytic converter. When the engine runs rich you will get a sulfur smell that smells sort of like rotten eggs.

Return the battery and get another, sometimes because the battery set there too long and won’t work, I had twice when I had my Union 76 Station, after you try it, if you still can not start your son’s car. Let discuss more.
