Question about 2001 Ford Windstar

1995 Windstar OBD II showing codes PO340, PO171, and PO174.

We are having problem with the Windstar. We are not able to run over 20 miles per hour, and at 2100 RPM the idle keep going up but the car loss strength it is like the transmission goes to neutral. The first test showed codes PO402, PO732, PO733, PO171, and PO174 so I replaced DPFE/EGR Valve Presure Sensor, and Neutral Safety Switch I went to the garage, and the mechanic told me that the transmission is fried so just to verify I bought the OBD II to run the diagnostic tests, now the test is showing codes PO340 (Camshaft Position Sensor A - Bank 1 Circuit Malfuntion) PO171 (System to Lean, Bank 1), and PO174 (System to Lean, Bank 2). I will be looking for leaks but in the mean time I would like to know what are the symptoms of a bad Camshaft Position Sensor. Please reply to: apbrasa@yahoo.com

No, some of the first codes disappear. The only codes that I have at this time are: PO340 (Camshaft Position Sensor A - Bank 1 Circuit Malfuntion) PO171
(System to Lean, Bank 1), and PO174 (System to Lean, Bank 2). You said that the symptoms of a faulty Camshaft Position Sensor can include hard starting
(or no starting), rough running/misfiring and/or loss of power but what about symptoms like the transmission is bad like that the second gear is not working. Can be this symptoms related to a bad Camshaft Position Sensor. Other question where is it located, and is it easy to replace?

I replaced the DPFE, and nd Neutral Safety Switch but not the EGR. I cleaned the MAF, and IAC. After that the car was running better, and I was able to run at 20 miles per hour before I was running at no more than 10 mph but I still still have the same problem with the idle at 2100 RPM in Drive but the symptoms didn't show up in 2nd. neither in 1st. I cleared the codes before I drove the car for few miles and after that I run the test again and the codes didn't show up so I would like to know how many cycles are needed for the codes to appear again. Also I would like to know if the OBD II will show if the transmission is bad.

Symptoms of a faulty Camshaft Position Sensor can include hard starting (or no starting), rough running/misfiring and/or loss of power.

Code 340 COULD be caused solely by a faulty Camshaft Position Sensor. However, this code refers to the entire circuit. So, replacing the sensor may not fix the issue. The problem could lie in any part of the circuit - the sensor itself, the wiring, or the PCM.

Codes 171 and 174 typically appear together. They are caused by the 02 sensors reading too much air (lean) in the exhaust. In most cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. I typically take it off and spray it with electronics or brake cleaner. Just make sure it dries before reinstalling. If this doesn't eliminate the codes, inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, check for a dirty fuel filter and ensure the furl pressure is within limits.

For clarification, the first trip to the shop your car showed codes 402, 732, 733, 171 and 174. After changing the DPFE/EGR, did ALL those codes go away and now only codes 340, 171 and 174 exist? Or do you have the second set of codes in addition to the first codes?

Did your symptoms change at all when you replaced the EGR? Or does the vehicle act like it didn't help in the least?

The camshaft position sensor is located at the front seating area, center, under engine cover, end of intake manifold, above water pump, mounted on the top end of the oil pump intermediate shaft.

Cen tech code reader problems 98568

All OBD Codes are on the internet with
print,charts,video,solutions

You Type your codes & read up

Study OBD 2 Systems also

OBD PO171
OBD PO174

I had to Google Cen Tech as i never heard of it

They appear to be inexpensive low end for sure

You won't get a lot of data out it

If your never planning on going to professional software,
consider the top scan/code reader type tools like Innova Professional or at least mid level Actron & a couple other brands

You really need to see sensors, emission monitors, so
your ready for inspection

You will only get Generic Codes from a code reader
not body functions likes abs,air conditioning, srs,& others

More data is better-- you will learn these systems as time goes by

They have been with us for 35 years now

OBD1 15 years
OBD2 20 years

Hi I hve 2 codes PO171 PO174 on 1995 windstar what do i need to do

Those codes indicate your Windstar is running lean so you'll have to find out why. A couple of things to check are a restricted fuel filter or a vacuum leak.

1995 Windstar OBD II showing codes PO340, PO171, and PO174

Hello;
With those codes, the first place I would check is the fuel pressure. Also check the fuel filter and replace it if you haven't already. Then clear codes and recheck. Even if your fuel pressure is with in range it still may not push enough fuel to operate your vehicle.
