This is a well known fault with this model. I am sorry but I cannot remember now if the problem was with the gauge on the dash or the sender unit in the fuel tank. There was also a big problem with the gauges giving incorrect readings when they appeared to be working.

Contact your local ford dealer service centre and they can tell you the fix as they have done hundreds of them.

SOURCE: gas gauge

The float that moves the gas hand is possibly stuck in the tank. If there's isn't an access hole in the rear of the vehicle you'll have to drop the tank. Unless it becomes free on it's own. Hope this is helpful. Please rate. Thanks

SOURCE: fuel gauge moves back and forth from full to empty

you have a bad sending unit inside your tank.
the resistance of the potentiometer inside is broke on the half tank part.

you have to replace it.

tnx 4 using fixya.

SOURCE: fuel gauge

The problem is the fuel guage sending unit, this is in the fuel tank, it will have to be changed out.

SOURCE: Fuel Gauge not working

The switch that you use to change tanks is probably faulty - the switch supplies power for the sending unit in the tank, and to the transfer switch for the gas lines - use a meter to check it

SOURCE: Gas gauge not working

Hi,
This sounds like the sender unit in the fuel tank is worn or possibly a corroded/ bad earth from the unit itself.
There should be an inspection plate above the fuel tank removal of this should reveal the sender unit and connections, if not can you see on top of it? make sure all connections are clean and not gunged up with corrosion. Try spraying Wd40 or similar around the area whilst wiggling the plugs/wires.
Good Luck, Please press the Blue Button to appraise my FREE! Effort.
Thank You!

2003 Honda crv fuel gauge doesn't register full when filling up tank also twice while driving the gauge goes to empty and fuel light comes on

Could be the sending unit in the tank or the gauge on the dash.
A mechanic would test each component by disconnecting the harness at the tank.

Gas gauge goes to empty after fueling my 2003 kia sorento

Hi. could be a number of things but a likely guess is the float on the in tank sender has sunk as it happened when you filled up. I don't know the sorento personally but often under the back seat there is a black plastic access panel to the fuel pump and sender assembly. under that will be the pump assembly with a 4 pin plug. 2 thick wires to the pump and two thin wires to the sender, If that's the case link out the two thin wires and the fuel gauge should go to the top with the ignition on. That will prove if its the fuel gauge sender. Jon

2003 Chevy S10 had fuel pump replaced. When fuel gauge shows slightly below half, the gauge falls to empty and low fuel lights blinks. What could be causing this?

hi,

sounds like the sending unit rheostat(sending unit) has a bad contact or break in the resistance wire. inside the tank theres a float attached to an arm that goes to a small rheostat, like a volume control on a stereo. the rheostat is sending a scratchy signal or no signal to the computer and your getting these readings. that part is inside the gas tank, the part usually comes integrated with the fuel pump. the gas tank has to be lowered to fix it.

The fuel gauge slowly goes down to indicate that my tank is empty, but it is not.

Sound like the float has a hole in it and fills with fuel when the tank fills up, you will have ti remove the gas tank and check the float, most of the time you can replace the unit as one.

Fuel gauge registers empty after fill up

It sounds to me like you have a short in your wiring harness at you fuel tank. there is a plug on top of your fuel tank that controls you fuel pump and your sending unit that tells you how much fuel is in the tank. This plug can be a real p.i.a to get to on some vehicles, you may have to take the vehicle to a shop to fix it, if you are not mechanically inclined.
