Question about 2000 Saturn SL

Oil consumption I use about a quart of oil between oil changes. I make sure i change every 3000 miles if not before. I looked on a lift and could find no leaks. It was totally dry. I don't think it is a head gasket cause im not eating antifreeze. What else can it be? It only has 100000 on it

Bad valve seals: The valves are located in thecylinder head above the combustion chamber. Oil is pumped at 50 to 80 psi of pressure into the top of the head, lubricating the valve-train; the valveshave seals on them to stop the flow of oil down into the engine when the valve is open. If the seals fail, oil is allowed to flow down into the combustion chamber and is burned.
Worn valve guides: The valves are guided by a small cylindrical chamber called a valve guide. These guides wear over time causing eccentricity (or slop); the excess gap allows the flow of oil down the valve stem into the combustion chamber to be burned. What about the valve seal you say? Well, the gap is too great for the seal to stop the oil flow, so down it goes to be burned.
Pressurized crankcase due to clogged PCV or breather system:The car's engine is a giant pump, consequently it must breathe. The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system does just this, allows the engine to exhaust the excess pressure build-up (which is a natural phenomenon of the internal combustion engine). Carbon build-up is a by-product of an engine and can build up in the PCV system, clogging the breathing passages. This in turn pressurizes the oil pan and pushes oil up into the fuel delivery system, where it is fed into the engine and burned.
Blow-by from worn piston rings: The pistons in your car's engine have seals around them in the form of rings. These rings do two things:

  1. Seal the combustion chamber so the precious power developed from the firing of the cylinder is not lost.
  2. Provide vital lubrication to the cylinder walls.
When the rings wear out, the pressure from combustion reverses down into the oil pan, pressurizing it and forcing oil into the valve covers, through the breather system, back into the fuel delivery system, and into the engine to be burned.
You may ask yourself, "What can I do to stop this from happening?" Keep your oil and filter changed every 3,000 miles and keep the air filters changed every 12,000 miles!! This will keep sludge and carbon buildup down to a minimum. Understand that you can't stop mechanical wear, but you can slow it down!

we check oil every other fuel fill up. on old cars, every fill up
did you run car 10,000 miles to a oil change? unstated.
1qt/3000 miles is perfectly OK.
so 10000 mles is 3.3 quarts burned and off the top of the dip stick

Dear Sirs, I own Pathfinder 2006. Recently Oil goes out from MAX mark to MIN mark within 8000 km (5000 miles). My dealer tells me that this is regular consumption which is confirmed by NISSAN officials....


  • Well MAX to MIN on the dipstick is a quart of oil in difference. You need to have the oil changed every 3,000 miles (5,000 miles for a synthetic). I don't think that a 2006 Nissan should burn a quart of oil every 5,000 miles. That seems a bit absurd. For much older vehicles this might be true but for a 2006, much more efficient vehicle, it should not burn a quart every 5.000 miles.

Bought certified BMX 335i convertible and after only 3000 miles of driving the low oil light is on. Is this normal oil consumption or is there a problem?


Though I am not familiar with the 2007 model, on the e46s, I know that the low oil light comes on when you are down only about 1/2 quart. Does your model have a dip stick?
A half quart in 3000 miles is not cause for concern. Most of them burn a bit less than that, at least during the first 200k miles, but some burn more. It depends to some extent what kind of oil you are using. It will burn more Mobile1 than it will Castrol Syntec, for example.
I have an '04 330 that uses about a half quart in 7k miles between oil changes, and an '04 325 that goes through a quart every thousand miles. I am only a little concerned about the 325. I would not be at all concerned about a half quart in 3k miles.

I have a 2004 Kia Optima with a 2.4 liter engine. Should it use 4.34 quarts in a 3000 mile oil change cycle? We were told this is within specs for this car. It has 73000 miles on it.


its used how much ?? thats 8 pints of oil which is about 5 litres in 3000 miles whats it doing leaving a blue haze behind it ,i think this engine needs looking at as this amount of oil consumption will kill the catalytic converter

Oil consumed between oil changes (assuming 2,500 miles) should be between 0 and 1 quart, for a healthy engine.
More oil consumption is annoying, but not viewed as an issue by manufacturers, in fact most would not do anything until you exceeded a quart in 600 miles (I would be livid!!!), but that is how they think of it.

All that being so, the cost of repair far outweighs the cost of the oil, so to rebuild for oil consumption is often not cost effective. Personally, I would go mental at more that a quart between oil changes.

My 1993 voyager is like that. It may burn some , it definitely leaks some , and it could be just sending some through the PCV valve. Oil leaks and burning oil causes pollution . If you can fix it with a new seal or a valve cover gasket it is easier than constantly checking your oil. Temperature, trailering, speed, outdoor temperature, and engine RPM all can be factors if you are losing oil. If your engine is a quart down, the engine oil consumption rate doubles or triples. In other words the lower the oil level the faster it disappears. High mile cars will drive for years as long as you add oil when it is needed (keep the oil level between the marks). Fix any obvious leaks. Then determine your oil change interval (3000 miles, 4000 miles, 5000 miles). I change between 4000 and 5000 miles. If i am a quart low at 3500 I add a quart. If I am a quart low at 4500 miles I just change the oil in the car. A good practice is to carry a quart of oil in your vehicle just in case you need it. It is far cheaper to add a quart when needed than to go to the dealer once to maybe fix a problem that they may not be able to find or fix. Older engines (even some newer ones) just use oil , especially in hotter climates. Fix the obvious and carry a quart.

No more than 1 quart between oil changes ... usually about 3000 miles under most circumstances.

I see you have a four cylinder since it only holds 4.5 quarts.
2006 manual confirms your oil consumption is within allowances. Just check oil every time you buy gas like the manual reccomends. Do not over rev engine or accelerate from stops at max capacity of car as these can increase oil consumption.

I have a 2006 Buick Lucerne 3800 that I think has started to take exessive oil. it has 48000 miles and will take a quart in abot 4000 miles. I know thats not alot but at 24000 miles it didn't take a quart...


It should be minimal between oil changes. Even at 5,000 mile intervals you shouldnt see hardly any consumption. My 04 Avalanche has 88,000 and I just changed mine at 5K and didnt see any consumption. Look at the filter and drain plug on the pan and see if either of them are loose. Inspect around valve covers for leaks as well.

Unfortunately, the dealership will be a waste of time They will tell you that is normal and not to worry about it.

i say change your oil every 3000 to 3500 miles no matter what any little monitoring system says!!!!!!
oil is the lifeblood of the car and is the key to a great, long lasting vehicle.
