Question about 1990 Mitsubishi Montero

Overdrive will not engage

My transmission will not shift into 4th gear. I have been having this problem 4 some time now. The transmission fluid level is fine and there are no apparent problems with the other gears. I am trying 2 locate the overdrive relay so I can test it to determine if it is working properly, but having no luck. Any help with diagnosing this problem would be much appreciated.

Where is the speed sensor located? Now I am pretty sure it has to be the solenoid. It is making a sort of whining noise from under the Montero when I get up to around 40-50 mph

the vehicle speed sensor may be the problem, check it . All overdrive functions are controlled by the computer and the shift solenoid inside the transmission, no relay

Check the OD solenoid on top of the tranny (drverside) apply 12V + to it and take for a test run if she works then you know the problem may be the OD relay, temp switch or its wiring. I had just simply rewired a new OD switch.

Please let me know if this help.

Thanks,
Tom

Volvo s 70 1999 shifting but no got 2nd gear only 1 to 3 and 4

Your transmission will do this if it senses a problem with 2nd gear (or 1st, 3rd, or 4th for that matter)
You can try to disconnect the battery overnight so that it may reset the error.
Ultimatly if the error does not reset or comes back it is time to head to the dealer. That transmission is 'sealed' as in there is no dipstick to check fluid levels or top off fluids.

Code p0734 I just replaced eng. and trans. now have this code.

Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Incorrect transmission shifting Possible causes - Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Shift solenoids
- Transmission mechanical problems
- Transmission hydraulic control circuit Tech notes Start by inspecting the transmission fluid level and condition, and change fluid if necessary. When is the code detected? P0734 is detected when A/T cannot be shifted to the 4th gear position even if electrical circuit is good. P0734 NISSAN Description This diagnosis monitors actual gear position by checking the torque converter slip ratio calculated by Transmission Control Module (TCM) as follows:

Torque converter slip ratio = A x C/B

A: Output shaft revolution signal from revolution sensor
B: Engine speed signal from Engine Control Module (ECM)
C: Gear ratio determined as gear position which TCM supposes

If the actual gear position is higher than the position (4th) supposed by TCM, the slip ratio will be more than normal. In case the ratio exceeds the specified value, TCM judges this diagnosis malfunction.

1996 GMC Jimmy will not shift into overdrive.

4th gear failure is a common problem with this transmission, assuming it is an automatic. You should have the vehicle checked for codes by a qualified repair center with the proper scan tool. Also, check fluid level and condition. More often than not, the trans loses 3rd and 4th gear, as these are working off the same set of clutches. 3-4 clutches apply in 3rd, and when the 4th shift is made the 2-4 band applies giving you overdrive. If you have no engine braking in manual 3rd, you definitely have a mechanical failure, no 4th could be an electrical, or mechanical fault.

Transmission in 85 mercedes 300d shifts fine till it gets to 4th gear...makes a clank noise as it shifts...fluid level is OK...any ideas or suggestions on hoe to solve??

When the transmission-oil level is good and it's only 1 gear and your clutch isn't worn badly (= working normally, not like you can shift without (hardly) clutching), it's probably a bad tension-plate in the gearbox. Solving it means rebuilding the box or getting a replacement, both quite expensive.

First thing to do is check the fluid level if that ok you may want to think about having the transmission filter and fluid changed, there are other possibilities but check these first
