Ok so i jus bought a 96 vw golf 4 cyl. but the check engine lights on..now i know when a diagnostic test is run sometimes its hard to find out specifically what is wrong because it could be something undetectable..to make a long story short...i was told it was a speed sensor and a cam sensor..(which cannot be sold seperately cause its in the distributor...so back to the begining would it be easier to go get a tune up cause that was also a suggestion

I'd replace the crank speed sensor .. you can get them on fleebay for 20$.. kind of a PITA to see but it's right under the oil filter. I have a 96 golf gl and have fixed just about every GD thing on the car, but i love it so i will keep fixing it.. This took care of the problem for me
try the breather hose pipe ,if u look under car at front you will see a see through white ish rubber pipe ,if its split ul car will run ok in cold but as soon as you move up gears ul feel a drag on power and then a release that makes tbe car feel like its stalling and kangarooing ,just had mine done and now i can go 30 in 5th without kangarooing or loss of power.
If its the electronic unit, check the main fuses near the battery, also check the wiring connectors at the powersteering pump for loose or corroded plugs. If alls ok,you will need a diagnostic machine to read out what trouble codes are in the units memory.good luck.
Don't "wash" the motor, like you wash the outside. Did you pressure wash it? God people are too freakin anal retentive and go screwing up their engines. Next time use engine cleaner and try not wet any wiring harnesses or anything electrical. You probably killed a sensor connection or something.
hi check the basics is the air cleaner ok is there any restrictions in the intake if every thing appears ok test the engine control temperture are definatley your best bet yates210456
