I have a 2008 sprinter deisel and love it. Today its 20 below and it wont start. Once i do get it started they say you cant let the 2008 units run long due to low sulpher problem it creates . I want to let it idle to but they say it will plug the emmisions and cost a ton to get it unplugged ?? Anyone have an 08

P0087 is a low fuel rail pressure code. One of 2 likely causes. the quick diagnosis is to turn the key into the "on" position and listen for the fuel pump hum. If there is a hum, but the van doesn't start, I would then check the fuel filter. in between 80k and 100k miles, some of the sprinters run into a fuel filter issue where the fuel is too restricted to flow to the injectors properly. If you don't get enough fuel through the injectors, the engine will rotate, but not get enough vapor concentration to start.
in cold weather diesel gels up and sometimes causes a no start issue..a cetane fuel additive helps with this issue. if temps go below 20 degrees, add a quart per tankful of cetane to the fuel to help start on cold mornings. also diesels require more amperage to crank than gas engines do..thus a stronger battery is needed..
make sure you have at least half a tank when it gets below 20 degrees because when it is cold fuel is more dense and this added density makes the engine work harder when starting also if you havent replace the fuel filter
you may have an injector stopping up. is it super cold where you're at? the fuel may be trying to gel up. if cold, run anti-gel with fuel but follow instructions to the letter with anti-gel as if too much with fuel, can burn hole in top of a piston.if not cold, add a small ammount of transmission fluid to your fuel to lube the fuel injectors, small ammount is 1/4 of a quart to 20 gallons of deisel fuel.7.3 are funny at times it may smoke just a little at first but will adapt.have worked on 7.3 alot in marine corps great motors thank you for choosing fixya.com
