I have a 1996 Sonoma manual 5 speed 4 cyl, one morning i got up and my truck started and the engine started shaking when i put it in gear. I couldnt accelerate past 45 mph and i started to smell gas fumes. I replaced the gas filter, but the problem is still there any ideas? UPDATE: The catalytic converter is okay! I can smell gas fumes coming out my exhaust and i can smell gas in my oil! NOT GOOD! Any ideas what this could be?
Not sure. You need to do a little checking of ignition and fuel delivery. I would first check for spark at all four cylinders to eliminate or verify if ignition is causing it. If you have distributorless ignition, you have 2 coils. One coil serves cylinder 1 and 4, the other coil serves cylinders 2 and 3. If for instance, you have weak or no spark on 1 and 4, suspect the coil for them.
If you have good spark on all four, a bright blue, snapping spark, then pull the spark plugs to check they are not fouled, like oil fouled that prevents spark..
If ignition is good, look to the fuel system.
Maybe an injector is blocked open by debris and won't close. That's very rare, but a possibility. The spark plug for that cylinder would likely be much wetter than the other plugs after cranking it over. Maybe the fuel pressure regulator has failed. If you can find the fpr on top of engine (some are located under the intake manifold, hard to get to. and some are fitted to the pump in the gas tank-impossible to inspect) then pull off the vacuum line to it and check for evidence of gas there-a sure sign of a ruptured regulator, and it will let extra gas get sucked into the engine-just like your problem. If you can't find the pressure regulator, you should have the fuel pressure tested-mainly to see if it is too high-also a pressure regulator problem,. likely.
IDK, maybe this will help you a little, good luck.
