Question about 1997 Chevrolet K1500

1 Answer

All lights work inside and out except all headlights will not

I noticed the other morning when i turned lights on they had a little flicker one time. Drove to work and shut trk off and 5 min later went to move trk and no headlights!! I have changed the low beam bulbs and also installed a new headlight switch. They are still not working on low or high beam. Is there a fuse or a relay or maybe a fuseable link that i can check? 1997 chevy tahoe v8 auto 4wd

Check the fusebox, mostly fuses are uite easily recognizable by small icons similar to the icons on the switches on your dashboard, find the one for lighting and verify if it is still proper. If not, replace it.

A grounded out wire is possible but it should cause more problems than just the headlights unless the wire is the one connected to you headlightunits/bulbs. Is it possible to see if there is any power on your headlight wiring? I suspect they don't have any power at all. Check if the fuse has power or not. If the fuse doesnot have power too, your problem will be inside and perhaps the wiring form the swith to the fusebox is somehow broken/damaged. Let me know if the headlights or teh fuse has power.Be carefull with the checking, don't use a screwdriver to see if it sparks! ;-)

Sprry fopr the late reply, there is soem time difference between USA and Netherlands as well.
If you do have power on the bulbs but they don't burn, check if the replaced headlight switch is connected properly, perhaps + and - are misconnected. Check with another bulb as well.

I think your ignition switch has quit working, or it has stopped getting power. If you pull the connector apart to the ignition switch and check if there is one wire on the harness side of the connector that has power, it sure looks like a bad ignition switch. One fat wire, about 12 gauge size, going into the switch should be hot at all times. If you have it, pretty obvious that power is not going out of the switch. key on should send power out of the switch to the fuses for the windows and other accessories, and also send power to the dash for the warning lights and gauges.
Power to the switch will be either from one of your fusible links near the battery or from a maxi fuse in the fuse/relay block under the hood. The funny action of the key kind of points to the ignition switch, though. Still, check for power into the switch first.

I have a 01 Lincoln Continental that wouldnt start. After paying $69 to the repair shop they told me that the alternator and belt are working like they should but the battery wont hold a charge. I took the battery to Sears (6 month old Diehard) and after a day and a half they said the battery is good. Now the car starts each time but the lights(inside and out) all flicker and when you press the gas they flicker more? After about 5 minutes the flickering stops. What could be the problem?

I suspect wear and tear has shorted a wire somewhere. The question is where is the problem?
A little deductive work can go a long ways.
If the running lights work fine but it blows when the headlights come on then it is in the wires going to the headlights.
Try this. Get someone to help you by watching the headlights when you turn them on with a next size larger fuse. See if your helper notices one of the headlights being dimmer then another. If he does then it is "Likely" that that particular headlight circuit is the culprit.
Start tracing the wiring back from that headlight till you find the problem.
Note: You may have a bad headlight switch as well. as in it could be shorting out inside when you flip the beams on. If neither light comes on at all or merely flicker then Id be very suspicious of the switch.
If you are the only owner of this vehicle then you know that nobody has been hacking the wiring. But if you bought it you never know if there might have been a splice poorly made by somebody else that is now shorting out.
Hope you find it fast. wiring problems are a real headache.

Failure of instrument cluster & console lighting

My 2003 Elantra had a problem when I would use the turn signals. The dash lights would flicker on and off and if you jiggled the arm of the dimmer switch it would turn the dash lights back on. Over time it got worse. AND little did I know it also made the tail lights and front parking lights flicker on and off!!! So it was not good to say the least.
I took the switch out and opened it up. And inside where the turn signal components moved to make their contact connections, there was a build up of electrical contact grease at the bottom making intermittent contact between two points (I'm assuming gravity and vibration over the years moved the grease down there and built up). I cleaned the excess contact grease from the area. Reassembled the switch. Put back in steering column. No longer having issues.

Loose contact of dashboard light

This is usually a loosing proposition,  if the switch is failing, it is unlikely that cleaning the contacts will work long if at all.  Unless you time is worth less than $10 an hour, better off to get a new switch if that's what is bad.  Check for problems with a dimmer switch (if present)  for dashboard lights.
