You can't there is a switch in the gear shift that feeds voltage to the backup lights when you put it in reverse. Either the switch has a short or the wiring is faulty.

How to troubleshoot backup light problems on a 1999 mustang 5 speed

If the lights don't work, and you have no power to the bulbs, check the backup light switch - part of the neutral safety switch on automatic shift cars.

The backup lights on my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't work. Have checked all the things I know how to except the NSS. Where is the NSS located and am I better off trying to clean/adjust it or replace it?

the backup light gets its power from the neutral safety switch on transmission.
\When you put vehicle in reverse it toggles the switch in the tranny to engage the backup lights.
if that plug has the wire broke off the backup lights will not work.

How to replace clutch saftey switch on s-10 pu 1998

There are always 2 screw on switches on the transmission, one for neutral safety and one for back up lights.
The easiest way to tell which is which is to turn the back up lights on, and then pull off a connector to a tranny switch.
If you got the right one, the back up lights will stay on.
If you got the wrong one, they will go out.

Then unscrew the old switch and replace it.
