Question about Chrysler PT Cruiser

2 Answers

Hi, i have a 2001 PT Cruiser and twice since i changed the front pads both front callipers have locked up. Local garage has freed them off and can find no problem with callipers or break pipes. Any suggestions please. Cheers Simon.

Hi my name is Allen!

There are two posibilities here:

1-Sometimes if a car has high mileage, when changing the pads we often leave the caliper and hose hanging down and it will bend the hose where the bracket holds the hose to the body and it will crimp it so the fluid doesn't flow back to the master cylinder the way it should and this will keep the calipers compressed. But its not likely that both calipers will lock up at the same time. So the next solution is the most likely, but could be the first also.

2-Sometimes when changing pads we compress the caliper piston back without opening the bleed port and debris within system will feed back into the master cylinder and block it from working properly.

NOTE: To be sure the problem goes away and stays away, if you have high mileage I suggest changing the master cylinder and both hoses, and calipers.

NOTE: If you want to do a through job, replace the calipers also, this is up to you and your pocket book, are, you could try one thing at a time. First Hoses, then master cylinder, then calipers. As it could be any of the three doing it and its impossible to know which one.

Grinding noise from front wheel 02 pt cruiser

john, this could be the bearings in the hub end of the short shaft, the brake rotor, or the brake pad. I own a 2001 and have had this problem. It was the rotor, I don't know why they treat brakes like they do but I changed both rotors, and changed the struts while I was there. Hope this helps.

Hi, I am a biginner in driving cars, have a Chrysler PT Cruiser 2001, when washing the car front wheel cover plates, the splashed water got boiled (the car was idle for about 20 minutes), long-time drivers...

Don't worry, the maintenance station are right. Just think, when you drive in the rain, the pads and disks will get water on them. All you have to do, if you drive through water, is to dab the brake pedal gently a couple of times to dry them off.

How to change back brakes? I can't get the brake cylinder to go in.

Do you mean back brake pads or the back brake callipers?
To change pads you need to use a rear brake pads changing tool to screw in the calliper piston or if you are experienced enough you could screw in the calliper with a two mm thick piece of metal sheeting that fits into the grove of the piston.
If you need to replace the whole calliper remove the hand brake cable first and clamp the flexible brake hose remove brake hose, remove the callier with cylinder and then remove the calliper holder. fit new holder pads and locks and the calliper with the piston and the brake hose and the hand brake cable. Bleed the brakes. Mike

What type of brakes do I have on my 2002 pt cruiser

You have disc brakes on the front. Check you local library for a Chiltons or Hayes repair manul for step-by-step instructions on how to replace pads and check your rotors for abnormal wear

You could just need a wheel alignment otherwise it sounds like your cv joints.

That's a good question, but for some reason I have found through the 35 years I have been doing brakes that for some strange reason the front calipers tend to get the debris because everything is pushed forward when you release the brakes.

TEST: When you calipers lock up, here is what want you to do to check to see if it is the master cylinder. Release the pressure by loosing the fittings at the master cylinder, if you can then turn the front wheels by hand, then you know for sure that the restriction is in the master cylinder.

If you still can't move the wheels then the problem is either in the front hoses, the calipers or the proportioning valve which adjust the pressure from front to rear. Sence the vehicle is low mileage its hard to believe it would be the lines themselves.

Let me know what you find after releasing the master cylinder fittings.
