1997 gmc jimmy cv Halfshaft removal. Trying to replace lower ball joint and can't get the shaft out to get to the ball joint. Should I heat up the housing. Lynn

    Thankyou folks for your help. It worked I applied pressure with the puller and hit the end of the shaft and it came free. Saved my half shaft and now going forward. hanks to all.

Put your axle nut back on with about one nut thread still showing, Put an air rated impact socket on the nut. Spray the pline section with WD40 or Liquid Wrench and start hitting the axle towards the engine with a good sized sledge. The sicket will keep you from damaging the axle and the nut will keep you from damaging the threads if done right. DO NOT APPLY HEAT. This will warp the spline. If this doesn't work, call a wrecker and have it hauled to a shop where they have the big guns as the axle and hub may have to come off and be separated. I have had this happen. Sounds like the cv shaft is stuck in wheelbearing try spraying PB Blaster first you may wreck the bearig with to much heat, just be ready to buy bearing to. If it dont come apart with the blaster and hammer, then heat as last resort you may not have choice. good look

How to remove inner CV joint on a 2005 kia amanti


To remove an inner CV joint, you must remove the entire half-shaft from the vehicle. Here is the procedure:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel Spindle nut Lower ball joint from the knuckle
  3. Press the stub shaft out of the hub, use a plaster hammer if necessary.
  4. If removing the left side halfshaft:
    1. Using a suitable pry bar, pry the inner joint out of the transaxle.
  5. If removing the right side halfshaft:
    1. Using a suitable pry bar, pry the inner joint out of the center bearing bracket.
    2. Remove the center bearing bracket mounting bolts.
    3. Using a suitable pry bar, pry the center bearing bracket from the cylinder block.
    4. Remove the inner shaft from the transaxle.


    The individual joints CAN be replaced, but this requires disassembly of the half-shaft by cutting the clamps that hold the boots and frankly is a greasy mess. Remanufactured half-shafts are available for less than $100 USD and are already assembled for immediate installation.

On my 97 the abs ring on the cv axle is almost gone!! made a turn today and the wheel almost locked up..any help??


I would have the cv axle changed along with any integral parts such as the abs ring.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the wheel cover/hub cover from the wheel and tire assembly, then loosen the lug nuts. Fig. 1: After removing the wheel/hub cover, loosen the lug nuts 86877115.gif

  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle, then remove the wheel and tire assembly. Insert a steel rod in the rotor to prevent it from turning, then remove the hub nut and washer. Discard the old hub nut. Fig. 2: Before removing the hub nut and washer, insert a steel rod in the rotor to prevent it from turning 86877116.gif

  4. Remove the nut from the ball joint to steering knuckle attaching bolts.
  5. Drive the bolt out of the steering knuckle using a punch and hammer. Discard this bolt and nut after removal. Fig. 4: Drive the bolt out of the front wheel knuckle using a punch and hammer, then discard the nut and bolt and replace with new ones during installation 86877118.gif

  6. If equipped with anti-lock brakes, remove the anti-lock brake sensor and position it aside. If equipped with air suspension, remove the height sensor bracket retaining bolt and wire sensor bracket to inner fender. Position the sensor link aside.   7. Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle using a suitable prybar. Position the end of the prybar outside of the bushing pocket to avoid damage to the bushing. Use care to prevent damage to the ball joint boot. Remove the stabilizer bar link at the stabilizer bar.     1. Slide the link shaft out of the transaxle. Support the end of the shaft by suspending it from a convenient underbody component with a piece of wire. Do not allow the shaft to hang unsupported, damage to the outboard CV-joint may occur.
    2. Separate the outboard CV-joint from the hub using front hub remover tool T81P-1104-C or equivalent and metric adapter tools T83P-1104-BH, T86P-1104-Al and T81P-1104-A or equivalent. NOTE: Never use a hammer to separate the outboard CV-joint stub shaft from the hub. Damage to the CV-joint threads and internal components may result. The halfshaft assembly is removed as a complete unit.
    3. Install the CV-joint puller tool T86P-3514-A1 or equivalent, between CV-joint and transaxle case. Turn the steering hub and/or wire strut assembly aside.
    4. Screw extension tool T86P-3514-A2 or equivalent, into the CV-joint puller and hand tighten. Screw an impact slide hammer onto the extension and remove the CV-joint.
    5. Support the end of the shaft by suspending it from a convenient underbody component with a piece of wire. Do not allow the shaft to hang unsupported, damage to the outboard CV-joint may occur.
    6. Separate the outboard CV-joint from the hub using front hub remover tool T81P-1104-C or equivalent and metric adapter tools T83P-1104-BH, T86P-1104-Al and T81P-1104-A or equivalent.

I've got a 1999 2500 Chevy Silverado , that I need to change a cv boot on , can u assist me.?


CV-Joints
Overhaul
These vehicles use several different types of joints. Engine size, transaxle
type, whether the joint is an inboard or outboard joint, even which side of the
vehicle is being serviced could make a difference in joint type. Be sure to
properly identify the joint before attempting joint or boot replacement. Look
for identification numbers at the large end of the boots and/or on the end of
the metal retainer bands.

The 3 types of joints used are the Birfield Joint, (B.J.), the Tripod Joint
(T.J.) and the Double Offset Joint (D.O.J.).

NOTE: Do not disassemble a Birfield joint. Service with a new joint or
clean and repack using a new boot kit.

The distance between the large and small boot bands is important and should
be checked prior to and after boot service. This is so the boot will not be
installed either too loose or too tight, which could cause early wear and
cracking, allowing the grease to get out and water and dirt in, leading to early
joint failure.

NOTE: The driveshaft joints use special grease; do not add any grease
other than that supplied with the kit.

Double Offset Joint
To Remove:

NOTE: The Double Offset Joint (D.O.J.) is bigger than other joints
and, in these applications, is normally used as an inboard joint.


  1. Remove the halfshaft from the vehicle.
  2. Side cutter pliers can be used to cut the metal retaining bands. Remove the
    boot from the joint outer race.
  3. Locate and remove the large circlip at the base of the joint. Remove the
    outer race (the body of the joint).
  4. Remove the small snap ring and take off the inner race, cage and balls as an
    assembly. Clean the inner race, cage and balls without disassembling.
  5. If the boot is to be reused, wipe the grease from the splines and wrap the
    splines in vinyl tape before sliding the boot from the shaft.
  6. Remove the inner (D.O.J.) boot from the shaft. If the outer (B.J.) boot is
    to be replaced, remove the boot retainer rings and slide the boot down and off
    of the shaft at this time.

To Install:

NOTE: Be sure to tape the shaft splines before installing the boots.
Fill the inside of the boot with the specified grease. Often the grease supplied
in the replacement parts kit is meant to be divided in half, with half being
used to lubricate the joint and half being used inside the boot.


  1. Install the cage onto the halfshaft so the small diameter side of the cage
    is installed first. With a brass drift pin, tap lightly and evenly around the
    inner race to install the race until it comes into contact with the rib of the
    shaft. Apply the specified grease to the inner race and cage and fit them
    together. Insert the balls into the cage.
  2. Install the outer race (the body of the joint) after filling with the
    specified grease. The outer race should be filled with this grease.
  3. Tighten the boot bands securely. Make sure the distance between the boot
    bands is correct.
  4. Install the halfshaft to the vehicle.

Except Double Offset Joint
To Remove:


  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the halfshaft.
  2. Use side cutter pliers to remove the metal retaining bands from the boot(s)
    that will be removed. Slide the boot from the T.J. case.
  3. Remove the snap ring and the tripod joint spider assembly from the
    halfshaft. Do not disassemble the spider and use care in handling.
  4. If the boot is be reused, wrap vinyl tape around the spline part of the
    shaft so the boot(s) will not be damaged when removed. Remove the dynamic
    damper, if used, and the boots from the shaft.

To Install:


  1. Double check that the correct replacement parts are being installed. Wrap
    vinyl tape around the splines to protect the boot and install the boots and
    damper, if used, in the correct order.
  2. Install the joint spider assembly to the shaft and install the snap ring.
  3. Fill the inside of the boot with the specified grease. Often the grease
    supplied in the replacement parts kit is meant to be divided in half, with half
    being used to lubricate the joint and half being used inside the boot. Keep
    grease off the rubber part of the dynamic damper (if used).
  4. Secure the boot bands with the halfshaft in a horizontal position. Make sure
    distance between boot bands is correct.
  5. Install the halfshaft to the vehicle and reconnect the negative battery
    cable.

Removal of front right axle from a jaguar 2002 x-type


Loosen the wheel hub nut.
Remove the front road wheel and tire.
Remove the tie rod end retaining nut.
Using the special tool 204-192 Ball joint Splitter
detach the tie rod end.
Remove the subframe reinforcement plate retaining bolts.
Loosen the subframe rear mount bolt.
Loosen the subframe front mount bolt.
Remove and discard the wheel hub nut.
using spcial tools 204-269Forcing Screw,205-491-01 adapter nuts,205-491 wheel hub puller
Detach the wheel knuckle.
Remove the lower arm ball joint retaining bolt.
Reposition the lower arm.
Detach the wheel knuckle.
using special tools 307-443 RH Halfshaft splitter ,307-442 RH Halfshaft splitter handle
detach the halfshaft.
Remove the exhaust muffler inlet pipe.
Remove the halfshaft seal.
Remove the transfer case Y bracket retaining bolt.
To prevent damage to the transfer box internal seal,
make sure that the link shaft is not retracted further than
200 mm from the transfer box casing.
remove the halfshaft.
Attach special tools to the halfshaft.
Lever the special tools to displace the halfshaft.
Install the transfer case Y bracket retaining bolt.
Remove the halfshaft.
Use suitable protective covers to protect the barshaft.
Remove the halfshaft snap ring.
Install a new snap ring to the halfshaft.
Install a new halfshaft seal.
Remove the special tool.
Remove the transfer case Y bracket retaining bolt.
Remove the special tool.
Make sure the CV joint splines are located fully.
Do not use excessive force when engaging the CV joint into the link shaft.
Install the halfshaft.
Install the transfer case Y bracket retaining bolt.
Tighten to 25 Nm.
Attach the wheel knuckle.
Reposition the lower arm.
Attach the wheel knuckle.
Install the lower arm ball joint retaining bolt.
Tighten to 83 Nm.
Install the exhaust muffler inlet pipe.
Tighten the subframe front mount retaining bolt.
Tighten to 142 Nm.
Loosely install the subframe rear mount retaining bolt.
Install the subframe reinforcement plate retaining bolts.
Tighten to 35 Nm. Tighten to 142 Nm.
Install the tie rod end.
Tighten to 35 Nm.
Loosely install a new wheel hub nut.
Install the front road wheel and tire.
Tighten the wheel hub nut.
Tighten to 330 Nm.
Check the subframe alignment.

Front ball joint with heat shield

Remove and Replace-

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  3. Remove the front wheel and tire assembly.
  4. Unfasten the retaining bolts, then remove the ball joint heat shield.
  5. Remove and discard the lower ball joint cotter pin.
  6. Remove the ball joint nut.
  7. Loosen, but do NOT remove, the stabilizer shaft bushing assembly bolts.
  8. Separate the ball joint from the strut/knuckle assembly using ball joint/tie rod puller J-35917 or equivalent.
Do NOT damage the halfshaft boots when drilling out the ball joint rivets.
  1. Drill out the rivets retaining the ball joint to the knuckle strut assembly and remove the ball joint from the knuckle. Use a 1/8 in. drill bit. Refer to the instructions in the ball joint replacement kit.
To install:
  1. Position the lower ball joint in the strut/knuckle assembly.
  2. Install the four ball joint bolts and nuts, as shown in the ball joint kit and tighten to specifications.
  3. Install the ball joint-to-lower control arm. Install a new ball joint-to-lower control arm nut.
  4. Tighten the stabilizer shaft bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  5. For 1988-91 vehicles, tighten the ball joint-to-lower control arm nut 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus at least an additional 90° (11/2flats), plus enough to align the cotter pin hole. Do NOT overtighten.
  6. For 1992-96 vehicles, tighten the lower ball joint nut to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm). Tighten to align the next slot in the nut with the cotter pin hole in the stud. Do NOT tighten more than 60° (1 flat) to align with the hole.
  7. Install a new cotter pin.
  8. Position the ball joint heat shield and secure with the retaining bolts. Tighten to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  9. Install the front wheel and tire assembly, then carefully lower the vehicle.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper suspension operation

u need 35mm nut socket to remove wheel nut then remove brake caliber and rotor then you to with a gear puller pull the wheel axle from cv shaft ,then remove upper and lower ball joint nut with ball joint fork start banging with hammer or airtools

How to remove cv 1994 pulsar to replace outer d/side boot


  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jackstands, then remove the wheel and the tire assembly.
  2. Remove the cotter pin from the drive axle.
  3. Have a helper firmly apply the brakes, and loosen the hub nut.
  4. Remove the caliper assembly.

It is not necessary to disconnect the brake hose from the caliper. Position the caliper out of the way and secure with mechanics wire.
  1. Using the removal tool HT72520000 or equivalent, remove the tie rod ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  2. On 1982-86 vehicles, disconnect the ball joint from the lower control arm, by removing the mounting nuts from the bottom of the control arm.
  3. On 1987-90 vehicles, disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle, using removal tool HT72520000 or equivalent.
  4. Using a block of wood and a mallet, separate the halfshaft from the hub/steering knuckle assembly. If the assembly is difficult to separate it may be necessary to use a press/puller tool.

In order to protect the halfshaft from damage, it is a good idea when striking the halfshaft, to temporarily install the hub nut.
  1. Drain the lubricant from the transaxle.
  2. Support the engine properly and remove support bracket if so equipped.
  3. Remove the halfshaft from the right side on automatic transaxle equipped vehicles and on all manual transaxles as follows:
    1. Insert a suitable prybar between the inner CV-joint and the transaxle.
    2. Carefully pry the halfshaft from the transaxle.


When removing the driveshaft from the transaxle, do not pull on the driveshaft. The driveshaft will separate at the sliding joint (damaging the boot).
  1. Remove the left side halfshaft on automatic transaxles as follows:
    1. Remove the right side halfshaft as outlined above.
    2. Insert a slotted screwdriver, from the right side of the transaxle.


Make certain that the screwdriver is properly aligned into the slot in the halfshaft.
  1. Tap the screwdriver with a mallet to remove the left side halfshaft from the transaxle.

  1. Pull the hub/steering knuckle assembly away from the vehicle and remove the halfshaft from the transaxle.

After removing the halfshaft from the transaxle, be sure to install a holding tool to hold the side gear in place while the axle is removed.
To install:
  1. Always use a new circlip on the driveshaft and install a new oil seal to the transaxle.
  2. Install the halfshaft into the transaxle.

When installing the driveshaft into the transaxle, use oil seal protector tool KV38105500 or equivalent to protect the oil seal from damage; after installation, remove the tool.
  1. Align the halfshaft with the hub/knuckle assembly and connect the lower control arm-to-ball joint.
  2. On 1982-86 vehicles, connect the lower control arm to the ball joint and tighten the control arm-to-ball joint nuts to 40-47 ft. lbs. (54-64 Nm).
  3. On 1987-90 vehicles, connect the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle and tighten the stud nut to 43-54 ft. lbs. (59-74 Nm).
  4. Connect the tie rod to the steering knuckle and torque the tie rod stud nut to 22-36 ft. lbs. (30-49 Nm).
  5. Install then hub nut and tighten to 87-145 ft. lbs. (118-197 Nm).
  6. Install new cotter pin in drive axle and mount the caliper assembly.
  7. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  8. Road test for proper operation.

How to replace the cv axles


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
  3. Remove the splash shield, if equipped.
  4. Drain the transaxle.
  5. Raise the staked portion of the hub locknut with a hammer and chisel. Lock the hub by applying the brakes and loosen the nut.
  6. Separate the stabilizer bar from the lower control arm.
  7. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the tie rod end ball stud.
  8. Remove the tie rod end from the knuckle, using a suitable tool.
  9. Remove the lower ball joint pinch bolt and nut.
  10. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle, using a prybar on the control arm.
  11. Position a prybar between the inner CV-joint and transaxle case. Carefully pry the halfshaft from the transaxle being careful not damage the oil seal. If equipped with a right side intermediate shaft, insert the prybar between the halfshaft and intermediate shaft and tap on the bar to uncouple them.
  12. Remove the hub locknut and discard.
  13. Pull outward on the hub/knuckle assembly, push the outer CV-joint stub shaft through the hub, and remove the halfshaft. If the halfshaft is stuck in the hub, install the old hub nut to protect the stub shaft threads. Tap on the nut, using only a soft mallet, to remove the halfshaft.
    NOTE Install Differential Side Gear holder K49A-4208-AT, into the transaxle after removing the halfshaft, to keep the differential side gear in position. If the gear becomes out of position the differential may have to be removed to realign the gear.
  14. Remove the intermediate shaft, if necessary, by removing the support bearing bolts and pulling the shaft from the transaxle.

  1. Install a new circlip on the end of the intermediate shaft,
    1. 1.5L, 1.6L (VIN 5), 1.8L install the circlip with the end gap facing upward.
    2. 1.6L (VIN 3), 2.0L, 2.4L and 2.7L install the circlip with end gap facing downward.

  2. Install the intermediate shaft in the transaxle, being careful not to damage the oil seals.
  3. Install the support bearing bolts and tighten, in sequence, to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  4. Install a new circlip on the end of the halfshaft, with the end gap facing upward.
  5. Install the halfshaft into the transaxle, being careful not to damage the oil seal.
  6. Install the halfshaft into the intermediate shaft, if equipped.
  7. Install the other end of the halfshaft through the hub. Loosely install a new locknut.
  8. Install the lower ball joint into the knuckle.
  9. Install the pinch bolt and nut and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  10. Install the tie rod end to the steering knuckle and tighten the nut to 42 ft. lbs. (57 Nm). Install a new cotter pin. Tighten the nut, if necessary, to align the ball stud hole with the nut castellation.
  11. Install the stabilizer bar to the lower control arm.
  12. Install the splash shield and the wheel and tire assemblies.
  13. Lock the hub with the brakes. Tighten the new hub nut to 155-206 ft. lbs. (214-279 Nm). After tightening, stake the locknut using a hammer and dull bladed chisel.
  14. Fill the transaxle with the proper type and quantity of fluid.

Removal and Installation
NOTE: This procedure applies to both rear halfshaft assemblies.
  1. s2n~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Do not loosen the rear axle wheel hub retainer until after the wheel and tire assembly are removed from the vehicle. Wheel bearing damage will occur if the wheel bearing is unloaded with the weight of the vehicle applied.
    With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
  1. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .
  1. NOTE: Have an assistant press the brake pedal to keep the axle from rotating.
    Remove and discard the rear axle wheel hub retainer and the washer.
  1. s2n~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: To prevent damage to the brake hose, do not allow the disc brake caliper to hang suspended from the hose.
    Remove the brake disc.
    1. Remove the two bolts and lift the disc brake caliper and brake pads off the brake disc.
      • Using mechanics wire, position the disc brake caliper out of the way.
    1. Remove the brake disc.
  1. Remove the bolt retaining the parking brake cable bracket to the frame.
  1. s2n~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Cover the stabilizer link bolt threads and the nut to prevent boot damage when removing the halfshaft assembly from the vehicle.
    Using a rubber hose approximately 37.5 mm (1.5 in) long, cover the stabilizer link bolt threads and nut.
  1. s2n~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif WARNING: The bolt that retains the upper ball joint to the knuckle is longer and it has fewer threads than the bolt that retains the toe link to the knuckle. Switching these bolts during installation will prevent the pinch arms on the knuckle from correctly retaining the toe link to the knuckle. This may cause the toe link to separate from the knuckle during vehicle operation. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
    Remove the pinch bolts and disconnect the toe link and upper ball joint from the knuckle.
  1. s2n~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Support the rear suspension upper arm to prevent boot damage when removing the halfshaft assembly from the vehicle.
    Using a wood stick, approximately 450 mm (18 in) long and 25 mm (1 in) wide, support the rear suspension upper arm.
  1. s2n~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to separate the outboard CV joint from the hub. Damage to the threads and internal CV joint components may result.
    s2n~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Once the outboard CV joint separates from the hub the knuckle will continue to pivot until the brake backing plate presses against the suspension lower arm. To prevent damage to the brake backing plate, immediately after separating the outboard CV joint from the hub, rest the knuckle on a cushioned support that is tall enough to keep the backing plate from pressing against the suspension lower arm.
    Separate the outboard CV joint from the hub and rest the knuckle on a cushioned support.
    1. Using the special tool, press the outboard CV joint until it is loose in the hub.
    1. Remove the special tool.
    1. Separate the outboard CV joint from the hub.
    1. Rest the knuckle on a cushioned support.

How do take out the cv joint on the front axle of


assuming you have the 2wd version....

1997-99 Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Unlock the steering column so the linkage is free to move, then raise and support the front of the vehicle safely using jackstands.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Insert a drift through the brake caliper into one of the brake rotor vanes to prevent the drive axle from turning.
  5. Remove the axle nut and washer from the hub end of the shaft. Hold the hub from turning and loosen the axle nut. Once the nut is loosened unthread it and remove the washer.
  6. Remove the brake caliper and support it with a piece of wire to avoid damaging the brake hose. Remove the brake rotor.
  7. Remove the ABS and brake line brackets from the top of the upper control arm.

Be careful when supporting the lower control arm that any components are damaged with the supporting device.
  1. Place a jackstand or jack under the lower control arm.
  2. Separate the axle shaft from the hub by placing a block of wood against the outer edge of the axle (to protect the threads), then strike the block of wood sharply with a hammer. Do not remove the axle at this time.
  3. Remove the cotter pin and retainer, then loosen and remove the upper ball joint stud nut away from the knuckle. Tip the knuckle out and toward the rear of the vehicle. Suspend the knuckle from the upper control arm or frame in order to prevent straining and damaging the brake line.
  4. Remove the lower shock absorber retainers, then compress the shock and secure it out of the way using safety wire.

Once the lower ball joint is separated from the knuckle, simultaneously push the axle shaft in towards the differential to allow room for the knuckle and assembly to be removed.
  1. Remove the cotter pin and retainer, then loosen and remove the lower ball joint stud nut away from the knuckle.
  2. Lower the safety stand or jack at the lower control arm to relieve pressure on the torsion bar, then separate the axle from the knuckle.
  3. Remove the differential carrier shield, being very careful not to damage the axle seal.
  4. To remove the shaft from the differential carrier, place a block of wood or a brass drift against the tripot housing, then strike it outwards using a hammer. You will have to hit it hard enough to overcome the snapring pressure retaining it.
  5. Support the drive axle, then pull the axle straight out from the carrier being careful not to tear the boot.
