Question about 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan

Cannot start 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan

Had to disconnect battery in order to perform a time consuming repair on a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan. Replaced negative cable. Turned ignition key and ... nothing except a single relay click that coincided with the turn of the key. Interior lights, horn, sidelights, high beams and dashboard lights function, however, no power windows nor headlights.  Repair work was done with meticulous care. All components snugged in place with correct torque requirements etc. New battery. Could a fusible link have blown? PCM? Reset switch somewhere? Your input is appreciated. Thank you, David

Voltage across terminals is 12.7 volts.
3.3L engine. About 90,000 miles if that helps.
Chilton repair manual suggests that problem could be either fusible link, relays, or starter solenoid/starter motor.

  • dave4leah Jan 15, 2009

Since the only sound heard is the click of a relay when the ignition key is turned, the likelihood of the engine starting is very small.
I will hold the key in what should be the cranking position for the time you suggest and record the terminal voltage.
Will send the result in the morning.
Thank you for replying. It is appreciated.

  • dave4leah Jan 15, 2009

This morning voltage across terminals began at 12.7v. Opened driver's door, attempted to start engine. Voltage dropped to 12.24v.
Clicking sound appears to be coming from the BlowerMotorRelay housed in the Power Distribution Centre.
    Battery: 650 CCA, 750 CA
Please advise regarding best type of battery charger to purchase.
Thank you for your time and input CountryCurt.

    one more thing to consider...
After removing the new battery to check soundness of wiring around the PCM & PDC, I decided to perform a continuity test between the battery cables while the ignition key was turned. Zero ohms for all positions except position prior to causing ignition. Wheel lock position, first and second positions registered zero ohms, ignition position resulted in about 71ω.
Chilton manual specified locking the wheel whilst changing the steering gear. Could faulty ignition tumblers/connections explain the symptoms described?
    Thanks again,

Correction to last comment... Zero ohms for all positions except position prior to causing ignition. Wheel lock position, first and ignition positions registered zero ohms, second position resulted in about 71ω.

I replaced a leaking steering gear. Followed instructions to the letter. Locked steering wheel, removed and installed parts carefully. Replaced negative cable on battery and van would not start. Interior lights, horn, power locks (unlock only), parking lights, brake lights, reverse lights, and instrument panel lights function normally. However, no low beams, CD player, power windows, or power locks (lock). Green fusible link connected to positive battery terminal is fine. No starter motor sounds. Blower motor relay clicks when key is turned to engine start position. No other relays in PDC clicking. Thank you for your help.

What exactly was the "Time consuming repair" that was performed on the van? What wires were disturbed in the process? I am looking at the schematic for the van and it looks the problem lies in the power distribution box or the junction box areas on the van and depending on what you were doing as to were the greatest chance of finding the problem is located.

David, u are correct, since the engine isn't cranking, that isn't going to give us information we can use. I goofed on that one.

  • Curt Downs May 11, 2010

U checked voltage w/ engine off? Would suggest checking w/ engine cranking for max. of 15 seconds, ignition or fuel disabled to prevent start. Voltage should be 9.6 or higher.

Although the battery is new, is it fully charged?

12.7v and 12,4v indicate a flat battery. Charge it.

No preferences as to charger, as long as it has trickle charge option (slower, but better for battery). Would like to see battery load test done by parts store to see battery condition, but a simple charge may be it. Let me know how it goes, hopefully you will have it up and running soon.

How to install a alternator for a 1999 dodge grand caravan se 3.0 liter

Best thing to do is to go to the public library and look in the Reference section for a repair manual for this vehicle. I could go into how to do it, but it is actually pretty straight forward as far as repairs are considered. Just be sure to disconnect the battery before performing any of the repair. (disconnect the ground cable)

You will have to remove the drive belt before removing the alternator.

2000 dodge caravan will click but not start

It sounds like you battery is just about run down. If the dash lights nearly die when you turn the key to start, the battery is definitely suspect. Have the acid SG checked and get the battery charged. If it does not hold the charge, the battery must be replaced.

My windshield wipers (front) on a 2000 dodge grand caravan go off and on on their own. They wont work most of the time but they will just pop on on their own or if u turn the lights or high beams off and...

My best guess is the switch is bad. Did you replace it? The problem could also be the bcm, but I would test the switch first. Remove it and check it with an ohmmeter.

The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system must be disarmed before working around the air bag or SIR system wiring. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary SIR system repairs and/or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable from the battery.
  2. In order to disarm the air bag system, allow the system capacitor to discharge for at least 2 minutes, before performing any removal procedures.
  3. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from behind the combination switch.
  5. Remove the mounting screws securing the combination switch to the steering column adapter collar.
  6. Remove the combination switch from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Install the combination switch to the steering column adapter collar. Tighten the combination switch mounting screws.
  2. Reconnect the electrical connector to the combination switch.
  3. Install the upper and lower steering column shrouds and tighten the retaining screws.
  4. Reconnect the negative battery cable and check all functions of the combination switch for proper operation.
