1996 mercury cougar xr7 shifting problems

Yea it shifts into all of the gears fine. We jacked the back end up to see what its doing and when in reverse it drives forward then it stops and stays for a while and when we give it gas it sits there not spinning and then it will spin again after a while then stop as if it its trying to go into reverse. When put into neutral, drive, first, and second it drives forward at about 3-5mph. Also someone told me it could be caused by the overdrive keeping the car stuck driving forward and the overdrive doesn't work properly so we took the cover off the shifter and the wires weren't connected completely so i fixed that and thats when it went from driving constantly forward in reverse to stopping and going as i described above.

How to adjust transmission cable to shift right

Hi,

Turn the ignition key in a clockwise direction until it reaches its first position, meaning the position the key occupies before it begins to crank the engine if turned further, then move the transmission's shift knob to the "D" position. Turning the key to this position is necessary to unlock the transmission's shift knob. The engine need not be started to adjust the transmission's cable.

Jack up the vehicle with a shop jack, then lower the car onto safety stands to increase the workspace underneath the transmission.

Loosen, but do not remove, the single nut which attaches the end of the transmission's shift cable to the driver's side of the transmission with a wrench.

Position the shift lever on the side of the transmission, where the end of the shift cable attaches to, to the "drive" setting by first rotating the lever in a clockwise direction until the lever stops. Slowly rotate the lever in a counterclockwise direction. As the lever is rotated, it will click. The first time the lever clicks, the transmission is in second gear. The second time the lever clicks, the transmission is in the "drive" position.

Tighten the single nut which attaches the end of the transmission's shift cable to the transmission's shift lever to between 10- and 20 foot-pounds of torque with a torque wrench.

Lift the vehicle with the jack and remove the stands, then lower the vehicle to the ground.

I hope this helps.

When the temperatures drop below 30 degrees I cannot get my gear shift out of park until the car is fully warmed up. When depressing the button on the shift lever it does not respond until vehicle is...

the most common fix is either the brake pedal switch is bad or out of adjustment. cars now days, you have to step on brake to start car, it is a safety feature so it can not start or go into gear if foot is not on brake. once the brake switch is locked, it will send current to the shift solinoid that releases the shift lock.usually its the brake switch ! have a good day !!

Car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

Mercury xr7 starts then starts coughing and chocking like not

My cougar does the same, it starts and then about 1 minute later (or so) the check engine light comes on and the car idles really high, with black smoke out the exhaust. It stays in second gear i think and it will not shift out of it. Max speed is 40 mph with the rpms screaming, it will go off after a long time but this is agrivating. I have a 94 mercury cougar xr7 3.8 ltr Any help please?

i would need more info but it sounds like your trans shifter cable is out of adjustment ; you need to carefully with the brake on and the car idling; move your trans shifter cable to all positions to check for forward and reverse.
Make sure car is chalked or raised of the ground ,
