Turn the key to the on position but do not start , listen for a humming in the rear of car if you do not hear anything it could be the fuel pump

Turning the key on will make the pump cycle at least once. turn key on and off listening to or getting help listening to the fuel tank area of the car. check filter by removal. If you go as far as to remove it, just replace it.
Also would be helpful to know year and engine if this doesnt solve your trouble.

Signs of a clogged fuel filter

Usually a clogged fuel filter will prevent the engine from revving over a certain RPM, say 1500 or 2000. A weak fuel pump or pump relay could cause it to stop running and then restart.
But the fuel system would not affect engine compression.

Engine turns,but doesnt run

You have a problem getting fuel to the engine. Check your fuel pump (start by checking the fuse) to be sure it's working and check your fuel filter to be sure it's not clogged. ALso, be sure your air intake filter isn't clogged. If everything looks good then start checking the rest of your fuel delivery system.

Ran out of gas ran fine for about 2 days went to friends when leaving it died, started right back up,but shaking real bad like a missfire, checked and seems the coil packs r ok,

Sounds like something in fuel system is clogged form running to low on fuel if vehicle is old and fuel filter has not been replaced for a long time.
It does not take much but a small particle to clog injector or it could be fuel pump is going out. You need to check fuel pressure and change filter and also you might have to get fuel system flushed and you might just have replace injector at worst. Hope this helps

Last week her trooper just died, wouldn't startt. We changed the fuel pump it ran for a week again it won't start.

Did you check the fuel pressure before all of this fuel pump replacement? If the fuel filter is old enough to be clogged up, it should have been changed long before replacing a fuel pump unit. Your fuel filter should be changed every 30,000 miles. However, it would have to be TOTALLY clogged up to keep the engine from starting. It would have been causing all kinds of drivability problems LONG before that could happen.

Then, has anybody bothered to check for spark when the engine will not start? Has anyone scanned the onboard computer? (which happens to be in full control of both the fuel system and the ignition system)

You just might be trying to repair the wrong system...

There is no way anyone online can accurately tell you why it will not run without checking the vehicle first....although many uneducated DIYers might GUESS for you...which seems to be just as good as you are already doing....

PROPER DIAGNOSIS REQUIRED!

Car died in front of house, would crank, but not start...fuel pump has been buzzing for a while so i assumed it went out, replaced pump & filter, sadly cant get it to start. checked all fuses, relays...

No pressure at fuel rail either mean a clog in the fuel lines or filter...or a failed or incorrectly installed pump. If you have voltage at the pump when you are cranking the engine over recheck pump and fuel filter. also try applying shop are to the fuel lines when disconnecting at pump and fuel rail to clear any clogs.

I have a 94 ford arowstar van that turns over but does not start. The fuel pump seems to work because i can hear it.would a clogged fuel filter keep it from running?

Yes a clogged fuel filter could keep it from starting, so could a failure in the ignition system, computer control, or base engine problem.

Fuel system clogged?

It sounds more like your injectors are not working. You can check for fuel at the test port on the fuel rail. It's a Schrader valve like a tire has with a metal cap on it. Check for fuel there and if the fuel squirts out it's probably the injector relay. Let me know what you find. Good luck.
