Like the other expert said the pump only runs for a few seconds with the key turned to the run position, then it shuts off, if the engine is started a different circuit keeps it running. Do u understand this??

Even If You Bypass The Relay If The Vehicle Is Not On The Fuel Pump Will Not Continue To Run Thus It Doesn't Get Power.

Fuel pump troubleshooting

First check the fuses... with a volt meter.. don't just look at them.. When you turn on the key the ign switch powers up the computer... .. The computer sends a single to a relay.. the relay comes on for 1.5 seconds when you turn the key to on to charge the system.. after you crank it for a few turns the fuel pump come on to keep the engine running. Turn the key to on and listen for that 1.5 sec. pump run.. if you have to go under the car and have somebody else turn the key.. if you hear it running then the fuel pump runs.. if you do not hear it run check that the ign switch is sending power to the acessories/computer. then check the relay to see if it is operating when you turn the key to on.. listen to it and touch it.. yyou should be able to hear it and feel it click. Just because the pump is running does not mean that it is pumping...so the next step is to hook up a pressure guage to the fuel rail and see if there is any pressure. (Harbor freight tools if you do not have one) You can jump the pump with a 12v wire.. jump it at the pump connector on top of the tank. if it runs check the fuel pressure.. if there is none.. or very little the pump is bad.. or the fuel filter is clogged.. or the pick-up filter in the tank attached to the pump is clogged.

Dont know which fuse operates fuel pump

) Unplug the main relay and then turn the key from off to ON(II).

2) Use a jumper wire or paperclip to jump terminal 1 to terminal 7 in the main relay plug. Does the fuel pump run?

3) Now use the jumper wire or paperclip to jump terminal 5 to terminal 7 in the main relay plug. Does the fuel pump run?

1999 saab 95 would not start.i was not getting fuel, checked the valve on injector and no pressure. removed fuel pump and jumped motor and motor run good.turn on key and pump runs 5 seconds. could it be...

Fuel Pump relays are designed to run only momentarily until engine is running.Even if fuel pump runs it probably won't maintain enough pressure if you had no fuel pressure at the fuel rail.Sounds like a new pump is the ticket.

96 Probe GT. Fuel pump doesn't run when it should.

Does your car run? Some fuel pumps run quiet so you will need to get your ear close to the gas tank and have someone turn on the ignition. The pumps only run about 3 seconds when the ignition is turn on without starting the engine.

how did you jump the fuel pump relay, by bypassing the relay or by applying power to contact that closes the relay? If you bypassed the relay completely you need to b ench test the relay you can do this easily by using any 12v dc power source. If you tested the fuel pump relay by applying power to the relay and the pump run and developed pressure. I suspect a wiring or ground issue. Good luck

I have no power to the fuel pump unless I jump at the diagnosis under hood. I have 12 volts to the circuit opening relay and with the key turned forward I also have 12 volts to and the leg on the co relay....

fuel pump only runs for 3 seconds or when the engine is running. Cycle key with meter hooked up or ear on gastank.. Listen and watch. for a quick 3 seconds.. The spark your experiencing is most likely your touching a ground connection. If you have 3 seconds of power then you prabably need a fuel pump.

I shut my car off and now it won't start. It cranks over and over and over but won't start even with a jump. Could it be the fuel pump?

Well the pump is possible. LOcate the fuel tank under the car have some one turn the key on and listen for a whining noise thats the fuel pump it will only run for a few secounds every time you turn the key on and off.
