Hi handtwhite

What I do without an impact driver is shove a large screwdriver or other large piece of metal such as a crowbar into the pulley and then turn the pulley until it locks up with the screwdriver against a thick part of the engine. This will make it so you can then turn the bolt off. The bolt comes off in the same direction as what the pulley spins when the engine is running. You may need a long pipe on the end of the socket wrench to give it a little more torque to get it off. Let me know if you need anything else.

Right hand thread .
The bolts are right hand thread (BUT) U DON"T want 2 remove the bolt in the center of he pully.U have 2 replace the tensioner & bracket assembly.There is many pounds of pressure on the tensioner spring.
Its the normal right handed thraed... It IS torqued to about 120 ft lbs though... You may need to wedge the flexplate/flywheel to keep from spinning the entire rotating assembly when you try to loosen it.

REMOVAL 1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Loosen power steering lock bolts and nuts accordingly and remove tension from power steering (P/S) and/or air conditioning(A/C) compressor drive belt.
3. Remove P/S and/or A/C drive belt.
4. Loosen generator mounting bolts and adjusting bolt.
5. Remove generator bolts.
6. Remove water pump pulley.
7. Remove crankshaft pulley.
8. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers.
9. Turn crankshaft so that timing mark ontiming belt pulley is aligned with timing mark on engine.
10. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on seal plate and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on seal plate.


Do not move camshaft or crankshaft once timing marks have been correctly positioned.
11. Loosen tensioner pulley lock bolt.
12. Protect timing belt with a rag.
13. Remove tensioner pulley.
14. Remove timing belt.


Mark the direction of timing belt rotation (on the timing belt) for proper reinstallation.
INSTALLATION 1. Install tensioner pulley.


Replace tensioner spring whenever timing belt is replaced.
2. Pull tensioner pulley to its furthest point and tighten lock bolt.
3. Check that timing mark on timing belt pulley is aligned with timing mark on engine.
4. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on seal plate and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on seal plate.


If existing timing belt is being reused install belt in proper rotation direction marked prior to removal.
5. Install timing belt onto timing belt pulley first, then idler pulley, exhaust camshaft pulley, intake camshaft pulley, and tensioner pulley in that order.
6. Check that there is no looseness in the belt between idler pulley and exhaust camshaft pulley or between intake and exhaust camshaft pulleys.
7. Loosen tensioner pulley lock bolt and allow tensioner spring to apply tension to timing belt.


Do not add additional tension.
8. Tighten tensioner pulley lock bolt to specified torque.
Tightening torque:28~38 lb-ft (38~51 N·m, 3.9~5.2 kg-m)
9. Rotate crankshaft two full revolutions (clockwise only) and align timing mark on timing belt pulley with timing mark on engine block.
10. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley are aligned with marks on seal plate.
11. If they are not aligned, remove timing belt and start process from tensioner&;nbsp;installation.
12. Measure timing belt deflection by applying moderate pressure midway between camshaft pulleys If deflection is not correct, repeat from tensioner installation.
Deflection pressure:22 Ib. (98 N, 10 kg)Deflection:0.39~0.50 in. (11~13 mm)
13. Install lower and upper timing belt covers in that order.
Tightening torque:5.8~8.0 Ib-ft (7.9~10.7 N·m, 0.8~1.1 kg-m)
14. Install timing belt guide plate and crankshaft pulley.
Tightening torque:9.0~12.6 lb-ft (12.3~17.2 N·m, 1.3~1.8 kg-m)
15. Install water pump pulley.
Tightening torque:9.0~12.6 lb-ft (12.3~17.2 N·m, 1.3~1.8 kg-m)
16. Install generator belt and adjust the tension.


17. Install P/S and/or A/C drive belt and adjust the tension.
18. Connect negative battery cable.
INSPECTION

Never forcefully twist, turn inside out or bend timing belt. Do not allow oil or grease to come in contact with timing belt.
1. Replace timing belt if it is contaminated with oil or grease.
2. Check timing belt for uneven wear, fraying, peeling, cracking and hardening. Replace timing belt as necessary.


3. Bend timing belt into a "U" shape as shown in figure. Distance "A" must be at least 1.0 in (25 mm).
4. Inspect both idler pulley and tensioner pulley for uneven wear and smooth bearing operation.


5. Inspect camshaft pulleys and timing belt pulley for broken teeth or damage.




Replace any component that shows damage, excessive wear, or that appears prone to a possible failure

U will need to use a air impact driver like tire shops use to remove wheel lugs to get this off, without it u are up the creek.

The bolt is simple. Just put a socket wrench on it long enough to hit the floor or just the lean against lower control arm. Then give the engine a crank for 1/4 second. It is off!

They'd be right hand threads-regular threads-to loosen, turn counter clockwise. An air impact wrench is best for removing the crank bolt. Or a long breaker bar and socket on the bolt, if you can hold the crankshaft stable so it doesn't turn backward with pressure on the bolt. You can pull the starter off, and wedge a big screwdriver or prybar against the flywheel's ring gear teeth, then turn the bolt with the breaker bar.

Is the crankshaft pulley bolt left or right thread to undo diesel P38 engine


the bolt will turn opposite direction of your engines rotation. so if when setting the timing your manual tells you to crank your engine clockwise then you will need to rotate the bolt clockwise to remove it. you will need a huge belt wrench or a reverse socket in order to keep the engine and pulley from moving so you can crack the bolt. if the transmission is not attached to the engine at this point you may be able to use a crowbar to prevent the flywheel from turning and stop engine rotation that way. goodluck

Change timming belt. where marks have to be set? 92 dodge colt


I lost you, stupid computer. Anyhow there are 8 different engines for the dodge colt in the early 1990's I can only assume its the 1.4L, 1.5L or 2.4L. The 1.4L & 1.5L the timing marks are exactly the same. The Cam points to 3:00 marks ther. The crank points almost straight up, slightly to the right, mark on engine cover. The 2.4L has 3 marks, The crank has an alignment mark at approximately 10:00, the cam sprocket points straight up at 12:00 and the idler pulley (to the right of crank shaft pulley) points approximately 11:00. They should all have a notch or mark when aligned. The short secondary belt, the crankshaft should be in the same location 10:00 and the balance shaft (to the left) should be at 9:00. This goes on after of course. Rotate engine 2 full revolutions and recheck marks before starting engine.

    NOTE: There are two belts in this system; the one running to the camshaft pulley is the timing belt. The other, shorter one drives the balance shaft and is referred to as the balancer belt or timing balancer belt. Use a piece of chalk or a marker to place an identifying arrow on the belts. The arrow can identify the direction of rotation or the outer edge of the belts. The belts must be reinstalled so it moves in the same direction. Protect the belts from oil, coolant, etc. It's an even better idea to replace the belts at this point.
  3. Loosen the timing belt adjustment nut. Push on the tensioner to relieve tension from the balancer belt, then tighten the nut. Remove the balancer belt.
  4. On all models except Prelude with VTEC, loosen the lockbolt installed earlier and the adjusting nut. Push on the tensioner to release the timing belt, then tighten the nut. Carefully remove the timing belt. On Prelude VTEC models, remove the timing belt from the pulleys, then remove the bolts securing the auto-tensioner. Remove the auto-tensioner from the engine. To install:
  5. Check the position of the timing marks. The timing pointer must be perfectly aligned with the TDC (white mark) on the flywheel or flex-plate; the camshaft pulley must be aligned so that the word UP is at the top of the pulley and the marks on the edge of the pulley are aligned with the surfaces of the head. Additionally, the face of the front timing balancer pulley has a mark which must be aligned with the notch on the oil pump body. This pulley is the one to the left crank when viewed from the pulley end.
  6. Fit the timing belt over the pulleys and tensioner. On DOHC engines without VTEC, remove the 5mm pin punches from behind the cam pulleys.
  7. Except Prelude VTEC models:
    1. Temporarily install the crank pulley and bolt.
    2. Loosen the tensioner adjusting nut 1 turn, then tighten it. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise until the camshaft pulley has moved 3 teeth to create tension on the belt. Loosen the nut again, then tighten it to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). NOTE: Always rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise when viewed from the pulley end. Rotating it clockwise will cause improper adjustment and possible damage.
    3. Tighten the lockbolt installed earlier to lock the timing belt adjuster arm. Remove the crank pulley.
  8. On Prelude VTEC models:
    1. Hold the auto-tensioner with the maintenance bolt facing up. Loosen and remove the bolt. NOTE: Handle the tensioner carefully so the oil inside does not spill or leak. Replenish with clean engine oil if any does leak. Total capacity is 1⁄4 fl. oz. (8 ml).
    2. Clamp the mounting flange of the tensioner in a vise using a cloth or blocks of wood to protect it. Insert a flat blade screwdriver into the maintenance hole. Place the stopper (tool number 14540-P13-003) or an equivalent clamp on the tensioner, then turn the screwdriver clockwise to compress the bottom. Be careful not to damage the threads or the gasket contact surface.
    3. Install the maintenance bolt on the tensioner with a new gasket. Tighten to 6 ft. lbs. (8 Nm).
    4. Make sure no oil is leaking from around the maintenance bolt, then install the tensioner on the engine. Make sure the stopper stays in place and tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

  9. Make sure all timing marks are positioned correctly (as described earlier).
  10. Align the rear timing balancer pulley (to the right of the crank pulley) using a 6x100mm bolt or rod. Mark the bolt or rod at a point 2.913 in. (74mm) from the end. Remove the bolt from the maintenance hole on the side of the block; insert the rod into the hole. Align the 74mm mark with the face of the hole. This pin will hold the shaft in place during installation.
  11. Loosen the tensioner adjusting nut and verify that the timing balancer belt adjuster moves freely. Fig. 13: The balancer shaft must be held in position during timing belt installation 86803139.gif

  12. Fit the balancer belt over the pulleys. Remove the bolt or rod from the maintenance hole.
  13. Temporarily install the crank pulley. Rotate the engine one turn counterclockwise, then tighten the tensioner adjusting nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Double check the positions of the timing marks and make sure they still line up. If not remove the belts and repeat the procedures. NOTE: Both belt adjusters are spring-loaded to properly tension the belts. Do not apply any additional pressure to the pulleys or tensioners while performing the adjustment.
  14. Remove the crank pulley. Remove the lockbolt installed earlier on the timing belt adjuster arm. Install the maintenance bolt with a new washer. Tighten it to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  15. Install the lower cover, making certain the rubber seals are in place and correctly located. Tighten the retaining bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  16. If applicable, raise the lower beam and engine into place. Install the rear bolts for the lower beam. Tighten them to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) on 1990–91 Accords, 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) on 1992–95 Accords and 43 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) on 1992–95 Preludes.
  17. Install the key on the crankshaft and install the crankshaft pulley. Apply oil to the bolt threads and tighten it to the following:
    • 1990 Accord: 166 ft. lbs. (230 Nm)
    • 1991–93 Accord: 159 ft. lbs. (220 Nm)
    • 1992–93 Prelude: 159 ft. lbs. (220 Nm)
    • 1994–95 Accord and Prelude: 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm)
  18. Install the dipstick tube and dipstick.
  19. Install the side engine mount (refer to engine removal and installation for procedures). Remove the jack from under the engine.
  20. Install the upper belt cover.
  21. Install the side engine mount support bracket if it was removed.
  22. Install the valve cover.
  23. Install the compressor and/or alternator drive belt; adjust the tension.
  24. Route the wiring harness over the valve cover and connect the wiring to the alternator.
  25. Install the power steering pump and install the belt.
  26. Reinstall the cruise control actuator. Connect the vacuum hose and the electrical connector.
  27. Double check all installation items, paying particular attention to loose hoses or hanging wires, untightened nuts, poor routing of hoses and wires (too tight or rubbing) and tools left in the engine area.
  28. Refill the engine coolant.
  29. Install the splash shield under the engine.
  30. Connect the negative battery cable.
  31. Start the engine, allowing it to idle. Check for any signs of leakage or any sound of the belts rubbing or binding.

Replacing the timing belt and water pump on a 1995 toyota camry le 4 cyl. need to get the drive shaft pulley off. 1st, right or left hand thread on the pulley bolt? 2nd any easy way to get the bolt loose?


Threads are standard. I use a 1/2" drive breaker bar on the bolt. Position the bar so that if you turn it clockwise it will hit the ground or the car frame. Then I turn the ignition to start for just a moment, cranking the engine over with the starter which will loosen the bolt. DO NOT let anyone hold the bar or stand anywhere near it if you try this technique. I have done it many times with no problems.

How to replace timing belt 1995 vw golf


  1. remove air intake pipe, and box (upper and lower section)
  2. take off timing belt cover
  3. take off serpintine belt, and v belt
  4. rotate engine to TDC marks line up on crank and cam. camshaft says O^T on it and on the cover behind gear, crank has a notch in the pulley and a arrow on the cover to line up
  5. remove crank pulley 6mm allens not the 19mm 12 bolt
  6. make sure timing belt is still at TDC remove lower timing belt cover there is 3 bolts and a nut holding it on the nut is by the water pump and the bolts are on on top and 2 behind the crank pulley
  7. remove cover
  8. mark intermediate shaft shaft right above the crank pulley
  9. remove belt
  10. install reverse of removal make sure to line up all 3 pulleys cam crank and intermediate shaft or it wont run and depending on how bad it is out of time if you do it wrong you could bend valves

Im assuming you have the 3.6L if you have a timing belt. Below is the process for replacing the belt. You can decide if you want to tackle the repair your self or have it done professionally.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Siphon the power steering fluid from the reservoir before disconnecting the lines to avoid spilling fluid on the timing belt cover. Use shop rags when disconnecting the lines to insure any remaining fluid does NOT contact the timing belt cover. Power steering fluid can damage the timing belt.
  1. Remove secondary timing belt actuator/tensioner, as follows:
    1. Remove the power steering pump, as outlined in .
    2. Remove the camshaft timing belt covers, as outlined earlier in this information.
    3. Rotate the engine clockwise to align the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets and crankshaft balancer to the front cover, if the marks are visible. If no timing marks are present, rotate the crankshaft to align the crankshaft balancer mark to the cast front cover timing arrow. Mark the camshaft sprocket teeth facing each other with a permanent marker, for installation reference.
    4. Loosely clamp the two camshaft sprockets on each side of the engine together using clamping pliers or equivalent. No deflection of the cam sprockets should be noted, if deflection is noted, loosen the clamping device.
    5. Remove the bolts and side plate from the tensioner.
    6. Rotate the tensioner assembly from the tensioner pulley socket and out of the mounting base. Removal of the tensioner from the tensioner pulley allows it to extend to its maximum travel.


Do not install a rod tip or tensioner boot in the jaws of a vise or damage to the assembly may occur.
  1. If the belt is to be reused, mark direction of rotation for installation purposes.
  2. Remove tensioner and pulley arm assembly by removing the tensioner pulley bolt and remove the arm. The pivot bushing can fall out. Hold in the pulley with a flat magnet, tape or cup plug.
  3. Remove timing belt by sliding OFF of pulleys. Do not bend, twist, or kink belt or damage to the belt may occur.

To install:
  1. Install new belt or old belt taking note of direction of rotation.
  2. Install the tensioner pulley to the mounting base. Tighten the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  3. Rotate the tensioner pulley counterclockwise into the belt using the cast square lug on body and engage ball end of the actuator into socket on pulley arm.
  4. Remove the tensioner lockpin, allowing tensioner shaft to extend and the pulley to move into the belt.
  5. Rotate the tensioner pully counterclockwise applying 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-20 Nm) of torque.
  6. Rotate the engine clockwise 3 times to seat belt. Align the crankshaft reference marks during final rotation to TDC. Do NOT allow crankshaft to spring back or reverse direction of rotation.
  7. Seat the lockring on the right exhaust and right intake camshaft into the bore by threading in the attaching bolts.
  8. Hold the sprocket from turning, using tool J38614 or equivalent. Tighten the attaching bolt to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm), taking note of running torque; torque required to turn bolt before seating. Running torque of bolt should be 44-66 ft. lbs. (60-89 Nm). If less torque is required, replace the shim and lockrings and inspect the nose of the camshaft for brinelling. If more torque is required than replace the shim and lockrings and check the attaching bolt threads for burrs or foreign material.
  9. Rotate engine clockwise 1 revolution and realign the balancer marks at TDC. Make sure timing mark on damper lines up with front cover timing mark.
  10. Repeat steps, starting with left intake then left exhaust camshaft.
  11. Install secondary timing belt covers and retaining bolts.
  12. Connect negative battery cable.

remove the outer small bolts to remove balancer(pulley) the big centre bolt holds crankshaft gear for timming belt which slides off with timming belt removed.

The power steering pump bolts all seem to have vibrated out, the unit came free and i can just move it around, the pulley moves freely, everything else seems to work ok


I don't have chrysler producs. I'll post 3.8L V6 Ford Windstar for reference. You'll get some idea.



Removal

  1. Install Steering Pump Pulley Remover T69L-10300-B on the power steering pump pulley (3A733) , and place the tool and power steering pump in a vise by gripping the small hex-head of the tool.
  1. Hold the power steering pump , and rotate the tool nut counterclockwise to remove the power steering pump pulley . Do not apply in and out pressure on the power steering pump shaft. Pressure will damage the internal thrust areas.

Installation

  1. Place the power steering pump pulley on the power steering pump shaft, and install Steering Pump Pulley Replacer T65P-3A733-C. The small diameter threads on the tool should be fully engaged in the power steering pump shaft.
  1. Hold the power steering pump , and rotate the tool nut clockwise to install the power steering pump pulley on the shaft. The power steering pump pulley face must be flush within 0.25mm (0.010 inch) of the end of the power steering pump shaft.
  1. Remove the tool.
  1. Fill the power steering oil reservoir to the COLD FILL line.

Steering Pump, Power Removal
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) .
  1. Remove accessory drive belt (8620) .
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Refer to Section 00-02 .
  1. Remove right front wheel (1007) and tire assembly.
  1. Remove power steering pump pulley (3A733) .
  1. Position drain pan. Remove power steering pressure hose (3A719) and power steering return hose (3A713) from power steering pump (3A674) .
  1. Remove four power steering pump retaining bolts (three in front, one in rear) and remove power steering pump .
Installation
  1. Position power steering pump and install retaining bolts. Tighten retaining bolts to 41-54 Nm (30-40 lb-ft).
  1. Install power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose to power steering pump . Remove drain pan.
  1. Press on power steering pump pulley as outlined in this section.
  1. Install right front wheel and tire assembly. Tighten lug nuts (1012) to 115-142 Nm (85-105 lb-ft).
  1. Lower vehicle.
  1. Install drive belt to power steering pump pulley .
  1. Connect battery ground cable .
  1. Fill power steering oil reservoir (3A697) to proper level. Refer to Section 11-00 .
