you have to disassemble the differential to remove the pinion gear to replace the crush sleave. to remove the pinion nut remove driveshaft then using proper size socket with an air gun remove nut then push out pinion gear from differential. to assemble check clearances of side bearings and pinion/ring gear contact clearances, and proper torque for pinion nut.

Ring and pinion adjustment

hello sir ...

RING AND PINION TOOTH CONTACT PATTERN.—The ring and pinion tooth contact pattern is used to double-check ring and pinion adjustment. To check the accuracy of your adjustments, coat the ring gear teeth with a thin coat of red lead, white grease, hydrated ferric oxide (yellow oxide or iron), or Prussian blue. Turn the ring gear one way and then the other to rub the teeth together, producing a contact pattern on the teeth. Carefully note the contact pattern that shows up on the teeth where the substance used has been wiped off. A good contact pattern is one located in the center of the gear teeth (fig. 5-21). Figure 5-21 shows several ring and pinion gear contact patterns. Study each and note the suggested correction for the faulty contact

NO--- Check Gear Ratio On Tag Or Tube--Front and Rear Are Not The Same. Or Count Teeth On Pinion And Ring Gear--Divide Pinion Number Into Ring Gear Number For Ratio.

Need to Replace Ring & Pinion Gear

Is that on a Toyota Camry? Being an east-west engine, they don't have a ring and pinion.

Need to remove the ring gear assy to replace the pinion shaft bearing

The ring gear is bolted to what is called a ring gear carrier, the carrier is bolted inside the rear end housing with two bolts on each side, it is shimmed on each side to adjust backlash and pinion depth so DON'T mix up the left and right carrier shims, once the carrier is out with the ring gear attached you can remove the pinion shaft and drive out the bearing races of the pinion bearings. You also need to remove the pinion flange where the drive shaft U-Joint attaches, just hammer it off with a brass faced hammer (a steel hammer will run the flange) once the large center nut is removed.

The front driveshaft in my 1992 jeep cherokee laredo has a lot of play in it.i have been told the pinion bearing and seal need to be replaced.can this be done without removing the whole differential or...

I would not just replace the outer pinion bearing if there is play there. Problem is as the bearing fails, it generates fine metal debris that travels back to the inner bearing and damages that one as well. since both need to be replaced, the carrier needs to be removed and it is wise to replace both carrier side bearings. The entire job requires precision measurements and a lot of experience reading gear patterns so it's not really a job for doing at home and not even for anyone in the trade unless they have done gear setups with good results many times before.
Good news is that there are plenty of used units available in scrapyards and the unit cost end to end is less than the cost of the bearing sets. If you have a manual (chilton or haynes are fine) and a decent basic tool set, that job can be done at home with few problems. It is mandatory to match the gear ratio exactly though or you will have an immediate and catastrophic failure.(yours should have a tag on one of the cover bolts or you can count the ring gear and pinion gear teeth.) divide ring # by pinion number and that's the ratio. (example: if you get a number of 3.23 the ratio is 3.23 to 1)

Look for a used replacement on ebay, craigslist, or junkyards. When you find the parts, then find a shop to install them for you.

1990 jeep wrangler rear end "bang" noise then jeep would move,

Could be several things. Does the rear drive shaft have any play in it? If so, could be that the spider gears, ring gear, or pinion gear or bearing have disintegrated. If it was the pinion or ring, it will cost several hundred dollars for the new ring gear and setup. It is not a part you will be able to install yourself.

Rear gear ratio for 93 toyota 4x4 pickup 5 speed.

The C/Tr: C refers to the colour of the vehicle Tr refers to the interior colour A/TM is your transmission type. None of those numbers identify the rear end ratio.

What you need to do: Since you have to replace the rear end, yank it out. Examine the ring & pinion gears on the differential carrier. Mark on each a starting point, and count the teeth on both the ring & pinion gears. Now, after you have both totals of teeth, divide the # of teeth on the pinion by the number of teeth on the ring gear. Example: 12 teeth on the pinion, 46 teeth on the ring
12/46 = 3.83 ratio
