Hello, I have the same problem, I ended up at an Autozone to buy new bulbs, but the attendent had the same car and had figured out that if you hold the blinker lever in, not far enough to turn on the brights, and hold it there while you need your breaks or blinkers, my break lights and blinkers work only while I'm doing this. Kinda a pain in the a**. But I don't even realize I'm doing it any more, you get used to it. and it beats someone not seeing you STOP!

This will either be a fuse or the brake light switch which is on the pedal it's self. More likely the switch as these are fickle at best.

I have changed my brake switch, fuses, and bulbs in my 1997 chevy lumina and the brake lights still will not work at all, my signal lights only work. What could be the problem?

here is howw it goes, the power from the fuse goes to the brake switch then to the signal light switch and from there to the rear lights, test for signal from the brake switch to the turn signal, if good the signal switch is bad

The brake lights wont work. The brake light over

the break light wire on the lumina runs through the blinker switch or multifunction switch on the colum.. check there as well as at the tail light sockets. on the late 90s gm cars the sockets had a tendancy to rot away... use a test light at the brake light wire in the trunk and have a friend apply the break. if there is power then may have to get new tail lights. or replacement bulbs.

Had the same issue in the spring. Replace the turn signal switch. A general weakness in the switch in these years. Replacement solved the problem in my 97 Lumina.

The ground wire in the trunk area, coming from the brake light harness, might have come off or really loose. Hope this will get your lights working again. Best wishes.

Back brake lights are not working

sounds like your brake light switch is going or gone bad it is located on the brake pedal up by the steering colum pretty easy to change just go to your local parts store and purchase one then you will know what you are looking for and will be able to figure out how to make the change

good luck
