1993 Mercury Cougar Hesitating and Cutting Off When Cold
I am having a problem with my 1993 Mercury Cougar (3.8L V6 F.I.) when I first start the engine. It starts up every time as always, and idles smoothly. But when I press the gas slowly while the engine is still cold, the engine hesitates then picks up. I see the dip every time on the tachometer. If I press the gas too hard, the engine dies sometimes. The weird thing is, if I let it warm up for 5-7 minutes, the problem clears up and the car runs fine from then on. A couple days ago, I started out without letting the engine warm up and it died at the first traffic light and would not restart. After pushing it out of the road and finally getting it restarted, I let it warm up and it ran fine. Whenever the engine warms up to a certain temperature, the problem goes away.
Before I tear into it and start changing parts, I thought I would ask for any advice or ideas, which would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Check the antifreeze level. It could be low, When the air turns cold all of the sudden there is an air pocket in the cooling system. Watch for coolant leaks and if it continues to get hot replace the thermostat.
If you are referring to the Check Engine light then this indicates there is a problem with the emissions system. Have the ECU scanned with an OBD2 scan tool. The fault code that has been set by the ECU will tell you where to look for the problem. If the engine is running fine there is no hurry, but do have this looked into.
If you are referring to the oil pressure light stop driving the car until you get this repaired as it may be serious.
take your car to autozone. It might be your alternator. It is better if you take off the alternator to have it tested, just incase it is a parasitic leak. This happened to my navigator 2 days ago. It was wierd because it ran fine when it was warm outside. But kept killing by battery when it was cold!
Hi, this could be something in the fuel pump. As the cold motor draws more fuel, it may just be just ok for the engine, but after it is warm, it draws less and may "suffocate" it that way. Same goes for air filter, take a peek if it is not ready for replacement. Has this happened suddenly, or has it occurrend during a long perion of time?
No ,this vehicle doesn't have a cold start injector . Plus the fuel filter wouldn't have anything to do with it either , cold or hot would act the same . I would have it checked with scan data , do you know what that is ? Could be coolant temp sensor , mass air flow sensor . 048 Engine Hard to Start or No Start Scan Data for Starting Problems
Testing an not guessing is the way to a proper fix !
