Question about 1991 Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

I have a '91 executive series lincoln towncar. When the car is at idle the heat and vent air fan works fine . However, when you step on the gas theres a horrible screaching sound and some smoke, the power steering doesn't work and the alternator light comes on. I got under the hood while this was going on, and the belt wasn't turning or slipping that I can tell. once the fan was turned off everything went back to normal.

Where is the smoke comming from?

If the power steering suddenly goes that mean the belt isnt turning the pump so is it locking up anywhere I'd try turning the pulleys by hand.

They shouldnt feel rough when turning. But it sounds like your belt is due a replace. From the top you may not see it slipping but check the groves on it it sounds like some have gone funky or the belt is over streatched

Use the rad cap to burp system also check firewall under hood sor controlled valve attached to heater hoses. If all that fails check heater hoses for heat if both hot its under the dash and your heater box has valve issue

I have a 2000 Lincoln LS. I replaced the motor over a year ago. I had to take my car back to the garage after having the motor replaces because I had no heat or air. Come to find out, they never hooked it...

Sounds like a faulty mode door actuator for the a/c in the dash. There are a series of mode doors that controls air temperature and air flow. They are located in the passenger side of the dash. If the temperature mode door isn't closing all the way then when you could still be getting heated air from the heater core when on A/C. The blowing only out of the defrost is a textbook sign of a bad mode door actuator.

The car runs at idle speed but when you give it gas it take in alot of air and cuts off. 1994 Lincoln towncar signature series

My first guess would be the MAF sensor. It is located on the breather tube I believe right after the air intake filter. Try unplugging the MAF sensor plug and see if you notice a difference. If you do-you will obviously need to replace the sensor. Dont think you can just leave it unplugged and not buy a new sensor either because your gas mileage will take a serious plummet...im talking like 7-10 mpg at best. Good luck!
