Question about GMC K1500

1987 GM 5.7 4wd pick up with dual fuel tanks. Truck will just come to a dead stop and sometimes will not restart unless fuel poured down carb. Will sometimes run of left tank and other times only run off right side.

87 GMC with dual tanks and TBI. I have replaced the tank selector switch and the fuel selector valve on the frame. Truck runs on right tank but when switched to left it shuts off. Does this mean a fuel pump if gone bad? Could it be some sort of relay not allowing the valeve to switch over to the other tank?

The electric tank switching valve under the is failing. Though sometimes it's the rocker switch on the dash, MOST of the time the valve itself is going bad. It should be mounted to the frame on the right side of the truck near the cab/box crossmember.

Old '87 ranger been sitting in folks yard few years. fires up fine, but spits and sputters going down the road

Old fuel in tank, fuel filter clogged, plugged/clogged carb. or fuel injectors.

1. Drain fuel from tank and replace with new fuel with SeaFoam or Lucas

2. Repace fuel filter

3. With engine running at a high idle and air cleaner off, spray or pour carb/fuel injection cleaner into carb/fuel injectors.

If problems persist, check plug wires for cracks and/or breaks. Pull spark plugs checking for fouling.

I parked my truck and when i went to fire it up it would not start. I know for a fact that my fuel tank switch is going out would this couse my fuel pump not to work. i Have a 1987 chevy truck with a 350...

believe it or not some came with a fuse for the fuel, I would check that first, for both of your tanks to be bad , well its unlikely, I would say a fuse, and if its not that you should be able to turn your key on and kinda lean down under the truck and see if you can hear the pump working , if you dont hear the fule pump and the fuse is good the pumps are bad

I have a 1987 mighty max truck that has been sitting for years. The motor turns over but wont start unless I pour fuel into carb. Where do I start to make this truck run again?

I expect the carb has become heavily fouled, old gas will quickly gum things up. I'd drain the tank, add new fuel and rebuild the carb. Also insure you have fuel to the carb (possible failed fuel pump)

If I may help further, please let me know,
Tom

Truck stalls at 45 mph,gas runs out

sounds like the fuel pump is plugged up. measure the fuel pressure if you can. also would disconnect the fuel filter, and crank it for a few seconds ,draining the fuel into a clear container to see if it is contaminated.banging on the tank with a piece of wood may dislodge some stuff too.never run below 1/4 tank with an electric pump,as it uses the fuel to cool the pump.
