I have a 1988 chev silverado 454 dually & I have removed the smog unit & replaced the belt to the right size( the mechanic did this) but now the bolts have sheared off the crank holding the bottom pulley. Was this because the belt had too much tension on it?

Yes, it could cause the belt in your car to slip.

You don't need to remove any parts.

Locate the belt tensioner and attach a wrench to the boss provided. Typically, you rotate the tensioner so the pulley moves away from the belt. You may find it will take several tries to position the wrench, or get the correct wrench so that you can rotate the tensioner sufficiently to remove the belt.

Install new belt in reverse order.

V-belt routing for a Chev 454 (7.5l) engine

This is the routing diagram for a 454 engine using v-belts only, not a serpentine belt.
The following abbreviations are used :
  • C - Crankshaft
  • S - Smog pump (A.I.R.) system
  • W/P - Water Pump
  • Alt - Alternator / Generator
  • A/C - Airconditioner
  • P/S - Power steering(In some installations also includes the brake booster pump)
This particular setup is most prevalent in motorhomes. Refer to the diagram.
Diagram 1 is for the first groove on the crank(closest to the block), and utilizes the 1st groove on the power steering.(belt no : 15415)
Diagram 2 is for the 2nd crank groove and utilises the 1st groove on the water pump pulley, the A/C pulley and the 2nd groove on the P/S pulley.(belt no 15590)
Diagram 3 is for the 3rd groove on the crank

If your motorhome uses a serpentine belt it replaces the belt in track number 3. (serpentine belt no : 6K560)
The upper smog pump(not shown in diagrams) is powered from the powersteering (Hydraboost) pulley (V-belt no : 15450)

Can the diff gears or diff head out of my 1989 2500 chev silverado fit into the diff of my 1989 chev silverado dually?

If you are talking about the carrier (what the ring gear is bolted to) Both axles need to be removed before it comes out. However, You cannot take the assembly out of one housing and just bolt it into another...the ring and pinion gears are a matched set and even so need to be re-set using dial indicators and specific procedures. If you don't do that, at best it will be very noisy, at worst, it will fail in a very short time.
See if you can remove the unit as a "drum to drum" assembly and transfer the entire part rather than what you are doing. Chances are you have not damaged anything on the good one yet, as long as any side shims have not been lost or mixed up.

Timming engine

They may be referring to the timing belt. It may have skipped a tooth or two altering the timing. Replace belt & align pulley dots properly. Top pully dot dead bottom . Bottom pulley dot dead top. You need to remove bolts for side motor mount & raise engine to remove & replace belt. Belt is housed by two plastic covers. Good luck!

got a clutch pedal in there? If auto, it could be a 700r4 or some variation of that. You can likely get exact info from a dealer if you give them the vin #.
