1991 Pontiac Transport Engine stall

1991 Pontiac Transport 3.1 L Engine with about 120,000 miles. Automatic transmission. Engine is original, never been opened. Only engine repairs have been water pump, power steering pump, alternator,
and the sensor at the throttle base that controls idle. About 5,000 miles ago, replaced spark plugs and plug wires. The fuel filter was replaced about the same time and due to all the metal particles in the filter, the fuel pump was replaced. About the same time, there is a relay in the transmission was replaced because once the engine was warm, engine would stall when the car slowed down such as at a stop sign. It took several restarts and a lot of engine reving to keep it going. The relay fixed that. Now I can drive it a short distance, and stop at a light and the engine dies as if you have turned the key off. Once it sits for a few hours, it will start right up and run as if nothing has happened. I doesn't do it everytime you use it but since you never know when it will happen, I don't want to drive it until I can resolve the problem. The service engine light DOES NOT come on. I don't have any diagnostic devices but by shorting the contacts in the diagnostic port, the service engine light flashes a code 12, engine not running code and nothing else. The outside temperature doesn't seem to affect the situation. It has happen on both warm and cold days. The last time it was very cold and in the middle of rush traffic. Help please if you can offer any suggestions. Thanks.

I am having the same problem with my 98 transport. did you ever find out the problem and fix it? I noticed the fan wasn't starting and so i rigged a switch to manually turn it on which gives me more driving time but it still stalls when i have to slow down or stop. I can tell it doesn't get enough gas at times and it runs better on the highway when i can floor it when it starts to stall.. I am going to put it in a garage soon but if anyone knows, please let me know because I would rather tell them what to look at and replace instead of going down the list of possibilities and racing up a big bill. Thanks in advance for yur responses.

If you have a electronic dash you can turn your car over 5 times without starting it and it will give you the codes. This sounds like possible vacuum hose, distributor cap wires and plugs. Hope this helps.

My 1987 El Camino stalls when stopping at a stop light (below 5 miles per hour) after it has been driven 20 or more miles. It is equiped with a carberated 305 V8 with automatic transmission.. Starts up...

Does it feel like the engine is stalling or the transmission is not disengaging? You may have a transmission or toque converter problem. If it is your engine you may have an EGR valve issue or an Idle air control issue.

Has anyone done a fuel pressure test? you need around 48 to 50 p.s.i. the fuel pump might be geeting weak and may not show up until it gets warm, when it shuts down again thats the time to do the fuel pressure test.

91 GTA 350 Cannot go in reverse; when I shift, the car 'jumps'

Sounds to me like the valve body is sticking causing the low/reverse clutch pack to stick. Might try a fluid/filter change. If all else fails, at least the 700r4 is a cheap/easy transmission to rebuild.

No oil pressure indication at the gauge

The easiest thing to check would be the oil pressure sensor, (this is probably a remove and replace operation) but noisy valves sound like a problem with the oil pump. I would not drive it until you get the problem identified.

good luck Loringh

1991 camaro 5.0 automatic

If this problem occurs when load is applied to engine due to transmission engaging one of two things is wrong. First and probably the least expensive would be your manifold air pressure sensor or MAP sensor. Next thing could be a problem with your transmission or torque converter rather staying locked up and stalling the engine out. Good luck
