My Dodge Intrepid was broken into and they tried to steal it. They took off the cover to the stearing cloumn but all the wires and everything seem to be okay. They must have tried to force a screw driver into the ignition b/c it is so badly messed up that the key will not even fit any longer. B/c of this it would mean I would have to get it towed to a mechanic. I do not want to pay all this money if replacing the ignition is something I could most likely do myself.
So my question is, is replacing the ignition something I could do or should I take it to a mechanic?
No you don,t to take it to a mechanic. my suggestion is take out the steering colum, and take it to a key person.
to take out the colum it will take you like 20 minutes or so.it not sure but you may need a ten and a fourteen,10&14

whats left of the key cylinder? Is it still in place? if it is or isn't... if you can turn it with a flat head screw driver to the "start" position then your in good shape. Chances are you have a transponder chip (a theft deterrent, probably why they weren't able to steal your car) built into you key... try to crank it with the screwdriver and place (the top of) your key near the cylinder so it can pick up the signal. as for replacing the cylinder... that's a bit more tricky, i would bring it to a dealership and try to get your insurance to cover it....
try another auto glass shop. these tabs at the bottom are very common. BE AWARE, when taking off the old broken tabs off of the glass, there is always a chance of the glass breaking. then you would have to buy a new window. look for a company that has an address, a place that you can go for these types of problems.
Try replacing the fuse, on the 2004's the number 14 fuse supplies the sunroof and cluster (gauges), etc. Not sure if the number 14 fuse supplies the same things on your 2000 dodge but worth a try. If you have a manual it will tell you. This will more than likely be your problem if not let me know. To locate the #14 cavity remove the cover to the fuse box and look on the underside of the cover to find the location.
hey all you do is go down to like napa or autozone and tell them u need the complete ignition switch and the diagram to install it and then you are set. you dont need any special tool to do this or anything.
