If you mean you want to start the car without the switch interfering, yes, you can do that by cutting the tan wire from the starter relay and grounding it to the chassis. This will allow the engine to start in any gear. However, the switch does a lot more that neutral safety. It tells the pcm what gear you want to choose. So, if the switch is bad, it could give the pcm bad data about your selection. Bottom line is, the car should start (please have your foot on the brake when you try), but the transmission may not work as expected.
neutral switch or park switch
which switch is the problem
check the wiring for the two
go to a wreckers /junk yard with the switch in your hand and get a replacement unit as the switch is generic and nor gm specific so any switch that has adaptable mounting will do the job
This sounds a bit like a bad Neutral Safety Switch. This switch will not allow the car to start unless in park or in neutral.I would start there.Go along to a car parts place and order one up and ask to see their diagram to see the exact location.(it varies from car to car) If you are handy in the slightest it is a simple job to pop the old one out and put in the new one.I think the one i replaced was about $35.Start there and good luck
The Neutral Safety switch monitors the position of your gear selector lever and either interrupts or allows the starting circuit in your car or truck to do its job. On newer vehicles it may also monitor the position of the brake pedal to make sure that the vehicle is in park or neutral AND that your foot is on the brake.
If your vehicle is equipped with a neutral safety switch, it should NOT start UNLESS the transmission is in Neutral or Park. On the other hand your vehicle SHOULD start when it is in Neutral or Park. If your car will start in Neutral but not in Park, you have a bad switch. Also, if your car or truck will only start by turning the key to the start position and wiggling the gear selector lever, your neutral safty switch is in need of replacement.
The nuetral safety switch is usually found near the gear shifter. If your car has the gear shift on the column, then the neutral safety switch is usully mounted on the steering column near the brake pedal. On floor mount or console mount vehicles you will find the nuetral safety switch mounted near or on the shifter mechanism.
the tick is the starter relay applying power to the starter. 3 possibilities 1 - your battery is so dead it cant turn the starter once it engages the engine 2 - your battery terminals are so corroded they can't pass enough current to start your car 3 - the starter windings are shorted out and need replacing
>>> if the car can be jump started it's not #3, if you can put a volt meter on the batter and it reads between 12-14v then it's most likely not #1
