Jack the car up high enough to gain easy access to the undercarriage and secure with jack stands, the transfer case will have a pipe plug in it, most likely 3/4", that is where it is topped off, don't overfill! stick your pinky in the hole, if you get lube on the end of your finger it is ok, don't add more, also you should change the fluid every 60,000 miles.

SOURCE: There is a whining in

You must raise the car on jackstands on all 4 corners (lift or jackstands) and remove the fill plug from the side of the transmission. You will see 2 plugs - 1 higher than the other. The top plug is the one you want. Fill the casing until fluid starts coming out. Replace the plug, and re-test.

The transfer case is bolted directly to the back of the transmission. Follow the drive shafts, they connect to the transfer case. It is never a bad idea to check fluid levels, however, unless you have a leak, you should not have to add fluid to the transfer case with any kind of regularity.

A backyard mechanic gave my 2001 outback an old change. However he drained the tranny instead, then when replacing the tranny fluid he wrongly put over 3 quarts into the transfer case on the passenger...

To drain the transfer case, you will need to **** out the fluid some, you can get a hand held pump at your local auto store. Then you will need to make sure that you add the proper transfer case fluid, then drain it again, then add the proper amount. Good luck with this, and my suggestion is to make sure that you hire on a mechanic that is certified, Lic, and bonded, or take it to a shop.

Noise coming from the transfercase near the transmissionand leaking fluid between the both where they meet up

First I would check your fluid level. There are 2 plugs located on the rear of the transfer case. Remove the top one and verify fluid level. To repair the leak the transfer case will need to be removed and reinstalled with a new gasket.

Verify fluid level first, add if needed and verify that sound goes away. If sound fails to go away you will need to have the transfer case replaced or rebuilt. I think the fluid is Dextron III ATF. Double check with another source before adding fluid.
