The engine is making a terrible racket when it starts and when driving. No loss of speed or running hot. Also the battery (replaced 09/06) now won't stay charged. When it is does run now the dashboard lights are flashing on/off and the car sputters for a bit then as soon as you come to a stop it shuts down. Then you have to jump it to restart.

If it's the water pump there should be water leaking, if it's the steering pump the noise would change as you turn the steering wheel left to right. If it's constant, it could be just old belt and bad idler and tension pully. Start buy praying a little water to the belt while the engine is running and if the noise goes away, the belt is in time to be chaged. If the noise is still there, then most likly it's the ilder bering or tension bearing. Good luck
check the coolant level - you may have low coolant, causing the sensor to occasionally read an air pocket. If you don't correct this you will burn out your motor.
We had this problem & eventually replaced both the thermostat and radiator cap, being careful to bleed out any air pockets by running the engine form cold with the heater on hot and the radiator cap off - keep watching & topping up the coolant as the enigine heats & the thermostat opens.
