If you're talking 4000 rpm, in neutral you'll cause engine damage! 2000 RPM is the max safe limit. Power loss is usually due to a restricted fuel filter. Does it smoke when running? (air filter), Try some Isopropyl alcohol deicer or fuel injector cleaner to ensure there's no water in the system. you haven't given enough info to diagnose the problem, i.e. drivability, history, and symtoms. The jeep is reving high once the clutch is in or in neutral. If you step on the gas it revs high and comes back down both in drivingthe engine light is on as well

The engine light indicates that there is a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) available for download from the vehicle computer. Go to your local Auto Zone or O'Reiley's (SP?). They can download the code and tell you whats involved and its FREE!

My car is reving up when I down shift to slow the car down in 4 wd.

As it should. Lower gear means higher engine revs.

Warning - downshift at too high a speed will cause damage to your engine and transmission.

Why are you dong this anyway? Saving the brakes? Pads are about $30.00 and should last 30 - 40 thousand miles. Downshifting puts unnecessary strain on your entire vehicle, even though it might be fun. It also increases fuel consumption and is hard on the tires.

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee with a 4.0L engine. The oil pressure gauge usually stays around 40 on the highway but when I come to a stop it drops down to 10. Is this normal or is my oil pump getting ready...

No this is normal. As an engine wears then oil preasure will be less this is not due to a weak oil pump but wear in crank shaft bearing's. When an engine is new and bearings are tight then oil preasure wont fall a lot from reved up to idle as the engine wear's oil escapes quicker from the crank shaft bearings. Reved up oil preasure increases idle it drops off. If the oil light stays out then their is enough preasure to lubricate the engine. In fact in an older engine high oil preasure is a worse complaint as this means the oil system is clogging. All is ok with your pump. If the oil preasure is moving up and down at constant rev.'s then the oil pump is faulty. Hope this put's your mind to rest.
