Question about 1998 Honda Accord

1 Answer

My 98 Honda Accord starts then sputters/shakes and dies...

It just started doing this the other day...If I don't hit the gas it will die. It seems like when I start it the first time of the day, it's ok...if I shut it off for like an hour or so and try to start it again that's when it does it. I've never had any problems w/my car for the last 2 yrs. I've owned it but now I'm affraid it won't start at all one day!!! Please help!!!

SOURCE: Unlock Code For Honda Accord 98

you need to call the dealer to get the code. you might have to unhook the neg battery cable to reset the radio again if the code doesnt work. also somtimes the code is printed on a small white sticker somewhere in the car. around the glovebox or in a door jamb or in the trunk under the ash tray. just need to look all over.

SOURCE: 98 honda accord

this was a recall on most accords. it is the ignition switch. dont wait to long it is dangerous my mom was having this problem in a 1998 accord and it got worse and started stalling at intersections. But it is a recall. depending on your VIN number they might do it for free. Call honda and verify. How bout a fix ya. good luck i hope you get it done for free. we had to pay :(

First question is - is the check engine light on ?
If yes you should check it for codes next.
You may have to use a scanner to watch the O2 sensor to figure out if it is too lean or too rich. I would also check fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge to make sure pressure is normal. Could be a faulty fuel pressure regulator among other things.

take off one of the plug wires and hold it next to a metal surface, get someone to turn the engine over for you and see if the spark is bright blue, if it is the coils are ok, then check for oil leaking around your distributor, if you have an oil around that area take off the distributor cap and see if there is oil inside. the seal may be gone, while you have the cap off it would be a good time to check the rotor button inside
