Question about 2000 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

1 Answer

Reverse acts like neutral

When attempting to reverse, the jetta does nothing; as if it were in park or neutral. I have found success by shifting into lower gear and immediately putting the vehicle in reverse. I don't trust the dealership due to inconsistantcies. I assume its a transmission issue. hopefully the fluid just needs to be changed

I have the identical problem with our 2000 beetle tdi . What was your solution and I'm hoping it was just fluid and not a rebuild.

i am a dealership tech and know what you are saying. Not looking at this issue or test driving your car, sounds like it is in the transmission, but before removing transmission (fluid change?) check the shifter cable adjustments.

The transmission shifts fine in drive, but when going through the geers, Park works, Reverse acts like park, Neutral acts like drive, Drive works, 2nd and 1st work. Any Ideas?

Hi Ken:
Sounds as if the linkage is out of adjustment. Did something specific happen to cause this to start to occur? If you look at the linkage, there will be some point where you can shorten or lengthen the rod that attaches to a lever on the transmission. One way will make it better, the other will make it worse.

Car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

2000 jetta does not shift into reverse

is this going from park?? if so, it could be the module inside the cover where the shifter is...this is the piece that tells the shifter when the brake is pressed and allows it to shift.... check that out and let me know if u have anything else....

Cannot shift the car into park neutral or reverse.

I had a car do this once and the problem was simple, the gear shift rod had loosened and shifted position. Check the rod at the transmission and on the shifter.

What engine? Rear wheel drive ?Sounds like shift linkage or cable out of adjustment slightly. Have a look at where cable or rod attaches to transmission for adjustment. If not sure of what your looking for get back to me with info.
