Question about 1999 Lincoln Navigator

1 Answer

Misfiring 1999 Lincoln navigator 5.4L 32 valve. I recently replaced spark plugs and when I started the vehicle it ran rough, few minutes later the CEL came on, pulled code po355 which is coil #5 circuit malfunction , switched coil to #6 and it still came up po355. checked power to plug, checked resistance on coil and it all checked out good. what can it be? may be crank sensor?

snap on has mode 6 built in deep in the menu , but not easy to use , several other manufacturers have come up with a mode 6 scanner , we use the autoenginuity's PC version and laptops , you can monitor the misfire count , for each cylinder , live . ford V8's with coil overs has got to be the toughest thing to deal with . especially in a truck . arrggg . mode 6 is great for verifying your work before you return vehicles to the customer . anyway P0355 doe's not pinpoint a single coil .. you did indicate P0355 and not P0305 , big difference , maybe i better wait till you confirm P0355 . johnny

hmmm , been there done that , that's where a mode 6 scanner sure comes in handy . 1 important piece of information you did not mention , did you clear the code when you swapped the coils ? ford is a strange beast .

2003 Lincoln Navigator, started bogging down on me and jerking when I tried to pass a vehicle that was doing 55 in a 65mph zone, I let up off the gas a little n it ran fine, but driving back home goin

Check it for codes

You most likely have a couple bad COP Ignition Coils,
possibly a bad EGR Valve or TPS Sensor

All those are common ford & lincoln items

Change the oxygen sensors just before the exhaust converters
if you have 100,000 miles on it

Replace the Gas & Air Filter & clean MAF Sensor with CRC MAF
Cleaner

Install New Spark Plugs

All I suggested should have beeb done when you got it

All your vehicles as well---It is called Preventative Maintenance

HEVROLET BLAZER 2000 MISFIRING

Timing is off, problem with timing chain, also check fluids in ******,plus also if you have a distributer in your vehicle,if it is cracked, moisture getting in and ruining the points,-that is if your vehicle has a distributer! This will make a vehicle run rough as well.
You can have new plugs put in,but if your spark plug wires are cracked or worn, this will also creat misfire and backfiring.

Have 2005 lincoln aviator - has miss at 30-55 MPH - no codes replaced all coils ( ford) & spark plugs (twice) - repair vacuum leak at PCV Still misses -- no codes -- help

The COPS (coils) may have shorted the drivers in the PCM (computer). You should get a misfire code for each cylinder misfiring though.

Slim possibility, but very expensive unless you have a service contract.

ACTION: Diagnose engine for engine misfire concern. If diagnostics determine an engine misfire which is characterized by leakage through exhaust valve(s), only replace the affected cylinder head(s).
SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR VEHICLES WITH RUNS ROUGH/MISFIRE CONDITION:
  1. Perform relative compression check on all cylinders. If abnormal, check cylinder leakage and actual compression for "low" cylinders refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-00.
  2. If leakage/compression check indicates a valve train concern, per valve train diagnostics in WSM, Section 303-00, replace cylinder head and cam assembly, pipe plugs and timing chain tensioner, per procedure outlined in WSM, Section 303-01.
  3. If cylinder leakage and compression tests are inconclusive, perform misfire diagnostic, per TSB 05-22-8. NOTE: DO NOT TRANSFER SPARK PLUGS. INSTALL NEW SPARK PLUGS IN REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD AND CAM ASSEMBLY. NOTE: THE ENGINE MISFIRE CONCERN IS TYPICALLY EXHIBITED ON THE LEFT HAND CYLINDER HEAD AND RARELY ON THE RIGHT HAND CYLINDER HEAD. 02 navigator misfire #7 cyl still after i changed plugs and coil

You've tried everything but getting the timing checked out. You've done all the other parts of a tune-up but that.

When you changed the spark plugs did you notice #7 was especially dirty or greasy, this could point to a seal being broken or a piston ring that needs replacing.

1999 Town Car began running very rough - suddenly.

When cleaning your engine, water/degreaser went down the spark plug ports. Try using a air compressor blow gun to remove the moisture from around the spark plugs and boots. The water was causing the engine to misfire on 3 cylinders at first and as the ports started to evaporate the moisture, the less misfiring was occuring. Dry thouroughly and hopefully coils do not have damage to them. Also check to make sure the boot is making good contact with the spark plug.

Running really rough

Spark plugs, Ignition wiring, ignition coil, or high tension cord may be faulty. They must be inspected one by one and replaced if necessary.
