98 chevy suburban engine turns over but wont start.

It kind of comes and goes. I've noticed it does it more in cold or wet weather. Checked fuel pump and replaced fuel filter, it is getting gas up to fuel rail valve on engine. It used to start after a bit but now it runs the battery down and it ruined the starter. It just doesnt want to fire. What is the most common cause of this and where should i start.

Did you do a fuel pressure test? or did you just push in on the valve on the fuel rail and gas came out? if thats all you did, that will not tell you anything.you GOT to do a pressure test. just 3 to 5 pounds under and it will not run. fuel injection is fussey. you can rent a pressure gage at most major parts stores. they can even tell you what the pressure shoud be. just because you can hear the pump run, dosent mean its pumping, or at least the right pressure. did you also chk.for spark? need to do that to. still need air, fuel, and fire to make them run. good luck.

When was distributor cap and rotor last changed? I hairline crack in the cap could cause starting problems, due to moisture entering (would explain the 'wet weather ' problem u describe). Also check condition of spark plugs, as it could be a number of things, which, all together are causing the problem. Check engine light on at all?

I'd Start With Checking The Spark Plugs, This Can Be Done By Pulling Them Out And Setting Them To A Ground And Trying To Start it Result Should Be Spark Obviously. With The Cold Weather Involved Id Try Cleaning My Valves If You Wanna Go The Easy Way Buy A Can Of Fuel Additive Injector Cleaner And Run It through A Full Tank Of Gas.

Have you looked at fuel pump and fuel filter? Turn key to first position and have someone near fuel tank. They should hear the pump cycle.

When you replaced the fuel pump, did you notice if the pick-up line was in good condition or not? I have been told by a mechanic that has over 35 yearsof experience that this was a common problem, and especially now with Ethanol being mixed in with fuel.

if you are mostly having trouble with cold weather,i would check the engine temp sensor,it tells the computer how cold your engine is so in the morning the computer will increase fuel like an old carb with a choke

If it has injectors it has a ecu, if it has an ecu it has a diagnostic port (normally under the drivers/passenger dash) if you look down at seat botton level you should see a small black port) You can go to any auto zone or parts place and they will scan it for free. You may have a head gasket issue with overheating or your cooling fan(s) may not be turning on. Check the codes first

THE FUEL PUMP IS LOCATED IN THE FUEL TANK. IF IT IS WORKING YOU WILL BE ABLE TO HEAR IT SQUEALING WHEN THE KEY IS TURNED TO THE RUN POSITION PRIOR TO ACTUALLY STARTING THE VEHICLE. IT WILL BE A HIGH PITCH. IF NOT THEN THAT WOULD BE A STARTING POINT. ALSO FUEL INJECTED CARS HAVE A COLD START ENRICHMENT VALVE THAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM. THIS VALVE CAUSES A MOMENTARY FUEL RICH SITUATION SO THE ENGINE CAN START. IT IS BASICALLY A CHOKE FOR FUEL INJECTED ENGINES.

I had a similar problem with my 1986 300e , which got progressively worse until the car was no longer driveable, I changed out the fuel pump relay and the problem went away.
