I'm not sure what these other peoples qualifications are but their answers are pretty ridiculous. if the car cranks over but wont start its got nothing to do with the battery or alternator. the alternator is not important until the car starts so even if it is bad that wont keep the car from starting. your battery light and oil light came on because the car died. this is normal when you turn your key on before starting the car these lights will always come on, just as they will do with the key on if the car dies.
I would take off the upper timing belt cover and see if the belt feels tight or loose. then try cranking the car over and see if the camshaft gears move.
timing belts break while driving down the road all the time and that is what I would suspect first because its an easy check, four 10 mm bolts and the upper timing cover comes off and you will know right away if the belt broke or not.
If the battery light came on and then the oil light, I would suspect the alternator belt or the alternator.
Thanks for the input, so if the alternator was bad the battery would still put out a spark?
The Alternator has nothing to do with the Starting System If it won't turn over how do you know you have spark? You just installed a new starter today & have the same issue
David I had the alternator tested and the belt to the alternator is fine. Someone has suggested that it may be the computer.
If you have a friend in the local garage, see if they can borrow the portable reader and connect it to the computer port. It will show the errors that the computer is storing. It could be many different things, since the mechanical devices all seem to be in order. If it was a spun bearing, like the one post said, you would have heard a squearling as the bearing died. Did you drive in an extremely disty situation? If the air filter is clogged, it could cause this problem.
Thanks, I found out my timing chain is broke. Cheap for the parts haha just not the labor.

SOURCE: Ran out of oil while driving-
No not siezed, if it was siezed it would not turn over.
You have "Trown a Rod" or "Spun a Rod Bearing"
The more you let it run the more damage will be done to the engine block. It may still be possible to rebuild but start it again until it is diagnosed.

SOURCE: car dies while driving battery light comes on
your alternator is not charging the battery up.
SOURCE: CAR WON'T STAY RUNNING
when key on and engine off, does the security light flash constantly? if so its shutting down the fuel pump, it starts momentarily due to the computer priming the engine with fuel. how to reset, turn key to run position, leave it on touch nothing, takes 10-12 minutes, start watching light around 10 minutes. it will stop flashing... turn key off, then back on and start this will reset the security system. they are sensitive on this platform car it will happen again. good luck!
SOURCE: changed starter on 01 montana now van won,t start
2001 Pontiac Montana, Been in and out of shop a year now. Started when I had a starter replace. It will crank multiple times for a day or two. Not getting any bad codes from computer. Have had every sensor replaced. Let it set for a few days it will crank for a day...the next moring it will not crank for days. Wiring has been run and checked, fuel pump comes on, started is engageing fine. One mechanic said it was not getting fire, he replaced a unit on the back of the engine that usualy goes bad...still wont crank...the next day it cranks. i am about to redy to give up.....but it has low miles. need some help.
