The check engine light is on to tell you the computer has found a problem that will affect performance, gas mileage, or emissions.
Such as the code 171 you asked about.
Code 171 is for the fuel mixture on bank one being too lean. The O2 sensor is telling the computer the fuel mixture is too lean and the computer can not make it rich enough.

Runs rough idle

your idle valve may be dirty or needs replacing would check this as it controls idle. sits on the intake with wires coming out of it.

1997 Chevrolet Suburban Check engine light soon is on

a Scan Tool will read your codes. even if the light is off it puts codes in history so they still can be pulled up for diagnostics. I would start there, You can get it done for free at AutoZone,CarQuest etc.

93 accord engine bogs like its running out of gas until the check engine light comes on then it runs great

Sounds like a common o2 sensor problem. When the check engine light comes on, it has gone into default mode and bypasses that bad sensor.

Engine runs rough after about ten minutes /idles really low

Just trowing some suggestions out there, but, I would check the idle air control valve (solenoid) or the throttle position sensor. If they check out then my last guess would be the map sensor or the vaccuum to the map sensor. Hope I was able to help. Best wishes.

Engine stalls, check engine light, not fuel filter.

the white smoke as it stalls could be steam in the exhaust. This is caused by coolant leaking into cylinders from a leaking head gasket. You should check cylinder compression next with a compression tester.
