Check to see if the battery is really getting charged when the engine is running. Also find that the relay wirings to the relay from the alternator broken. The function of this relay is to turn those dash lights off and supply current to turn the air con relay on when the alternator is charging, also you will find that your air con and fans wont turn on either. this relay acts like a self preservation for the battery if the alternator fails cuting out things that draw a lot of current.

Could be one of two things.

1. Your starter motor is no good.
2. If you turn on your lights and try to start the car and they dim to almost black, then you need to check the battery connections.

SOURCE: just replaced alternator on 1998 Isuzu Trooper.

There is a charging relay thats blue and sits in the engine bay fuse box .
This can often fail and give the signs of a duff alternator .

SOURCE: My 2002 isuzu trooper, 4.3 liter engine, will not

Hi,all the alternators job is,is to charge the battery,so the alternator has nothing to do with it not starting.now if your battery keeps draining down and you have to recharge it every couple of days, then it would be the alternator that was bad.but if you have a fully charged battery and it still wont start, its another problem! does it turn over and try to start but not start?? or when you turn the key over does it just go click-click-click?? or does it just not make any noise at all when you turn the key over?? it makes a big diffrence which of the three its doing, let me know which one its doing, also you can take your battery to auto-zone and they will load test to see if its holding a charge ok.....just let me know.......yz-maniac.

Try disconnecting a battery cable. Reconnect 5 min later. This resets the ECM. These vehicles are a real continuing problem when they get old. I had a 1990 Trooper II and finally junked it last year.

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

If the battery light is on, I strongly suggest that you have the battery charged. It can be an indication of a weak battery or a faulty alternator. If the battery light still on after charging then the problem will surely be on the alternator itself. If that's the case the alternator should be replaced to resolve the problem.

If the battery won't hold charge even on a new alternator then the problem will be on the battery itself. It surely is in the end of it's service life and replacement will be necessary.

You may try to reset it to by removing the positive battery connector, letting it sit for at least 5mins. then reconnect it again. This will reset the system and can get the battery light off.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

It sounds like the alternator belt or the alternator is going bad. The squealing sound was probably the alternator belt. the alternator belt might need to get tightened or replaced or you may need a new alternator. The alternator keeps the battery charged. When the alternator goes bad the battery can not be recharged. You also should keep the power steering fluid up to par or the power steering will go bad on you.
