I had the same problem on a 1998. The computer controlled mixture at idle is not working right, and idle is dipping below 700 rpm. The culprit was a dirty throttle body intake. This tends to foul the plugs as well, after a few minutes of idling, so i would recommend changing the plugs after you have the system cleaned. The problem is intermittent because at high engine speed, say 3000 rpm, the plugs clear up and work normally.
Ensure your spark plugs,wires (ignition coil and spark) and your filters (air and fuel) are within 2 years of installation It's erratic at 800 rpm as the engine is cold and they like the 2200 range for 3 minutes before they kick down on their own. Press the pedal twice before inserting your key. The owners manual states depending on the outside temperature, the engine will require more priming. Update if possible.
The idle speed for my 88 accord lx is 700-850 rpm for standard idle speed. The stalling is a seperate issue. When were plugs, wires, air/gas filters and distributor last checked? How long has engine been running for when you stall? Is the temprature gauge high? Any lights coming on when stall occurs? I am not a mechanic, but a DYI'er. These are common questions I am always asked when troubleshooting my Honda. :)
If you can keep the engine running with your foot on the gas at a stop it is likely to be the Idle control valve. Older Hondas' have 2 valves. fast idle control (which is prone to cause fast, or surging idle due to vacuum leakage) and the Idle control that takes over from the cold idle control once warmed up. They are located at the throttle butterfly assembly.
