Question about 1988 Volvo 240

1 Answer

Wiper motor 88 240DL

I went to the junk yard and got a wiper motor to replace my old one. but when I pulled the old one off the shaft stayed and thats attached behind the firewall. the replacement I got has the shaft secured in the wiper motor and a 2 or so inch arm attached with a bolt I can get the arm off but I t doesn't look like I should be pulling on that shaft. It looks like I need to get in behind the firewall and unbolt it from there. my thought is the fact that the shaft came out of the motor is the reason its not working. also the one I took off looks like an after market motor (no volvo stamp) 88. Its snowing I need wipers

i guess I dont know what connection your referring to. I cant get behind the firewall to disconnect anything there and there doesnt look like a way to get the shaft out of the replacement motor. im not a mechanic and I cant find one to do this so Im on my own.

ah ok i wasnt talking about the shaft behind the firewall but ok. how do I get the short arm off the shaft (that your talking about) behind the firewall? i think its bolted on. the shaft I was referring to is the one that actually goes into the wiper motor.
    thanks for the help

That a replaceable part that fails most often..pop it off and use same shaft..or even just the clip replacement with old wiper motor ..have you tested it as failed ?....can you hear it whirring when installed or even clunking as it rotates against disconnected arm?

so you need to connect the shaft behind firewall to the motor and short arm you just purchased.retrieve end of shaft by fishing it towards you adn snap the new motor and arm to the old shaft

How is it the windshield wipers were working fine. Now they do not operate. I hear the wiper motor running, but the wipers stay down with a slight jerking movement. What's wrong?

sounds like the linkage is broken/disaconnected, under the hood against the firewall is the wiper motor assy, behind that is the linkage something must be broken/disconnected

Wipers wont park on 1995 chevy cavalier

Most of the time it is in the wiper transmission in side of wiper moter. thats where the parking cam is. Spray pb blaster or similar on motor shaft and linkage it may help. Fix the problem, if not replace the motor. You may be able to pick up a used motor at a junk yard to save $$$$. Good-Day!

Sorry to say this , but its the ECM computer. Altenator runs threw this and it is dieing or dead. You can get one at a junk yard . you will have to pull yours first. there are numbers on them that have to be matched up. junk yard should be able to help you on this. It will still need flashed/reprogrammed. Some auto stores can do this at a fraction of the cost of the dealer. call around.

Used 97 honda accord wiper switch

Ask people at Junk Jard - they are professionals in their business. In most cases they will tell you you which car is suitable for donation.
Also, before you install the old switch, carefully dissemble, clean and lubricate with electric lubricant or Vaseline. It will help to prolong the life for forever.
Good luck.

Windshield Wipers dont work and can be moved freely by hand

sounds like wipers arm is not securely attached to shaft that is attached to wiper motors. They can strip out and you can either us JB weld to put them on or get new ones or junk yard ones.

I think i need a windshield wiper motor the wipers only work if i manually pull them and sometimes smoke comes from under the hood if i turn on

It could be the gear is binding up and overheating the motor. The cheapest thing to do is replace the entire wiper assembly from a junk yard. You can order this on line and have it shipped. My car did the same thing and I replaced the whole unit (motor, control, gear). You have to pull the arm that drives the individual wipers and the unit bolts to the firewall. It will have a connector for power on it also.
