Replace transmission fluid first.

Check Clutch settings, motor mounts, and have the car ECU scanned to find out eventual problems on Oxygen sensor and Tps that can affect the transmission.

Did you checked the transmission fluid if it is OK then the transmission will not have enough pressure. In any case transmission oil change would certainly be worthy.
Good Luck

Check the engine mounts and transmission mounts .if they are nearly tore apart then it can cause this problem.

He Said When He Puts It In Gear Guys Probably Not The Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter.

  • Michael Fisher
    Michael Fisher Jan 13, 2009

Sorry, I Was So Short About My Explanation I Wouldn't Check The Motor Mounts Because It Would Most Likely Just Make A Really Bad Clunk When Engaged. Also The Motor Can Be Sitting On A Bench And Run So Pretty Much Unless Your Transmission Is Sitting On The Ground And The Motor Is In The Car I Wouldn't Worry About Them.

With The Fuel Filter Or Fuel Pump The Engine Would Idle The Same Whither Just Sitting Or In Gear So For One To Be Not Working Or Clogged The Engine Would Stall On Start.

I Apologize To Anyone I Have Offended

However If The Motor Comes To A Dead Stop When Engaged I Would Suggest Major Damage In The transmission. Because If The transmission Is Faulty Or Locked Up Somehow It Would Stop The Engine In A Heart Beat By Engaging It At A Dead Stop. Kinda Like If A Fan Was Going And Something Grabbed It. But Also It Could Be An Oxygen because The Engine Not Detecting Or Allowing Enough Oxygen Into The Engine Would Choke It Out.

I Hope This Helps And Thank You So Much For Choosing

    Sincerely,
    Michael Scott

very interesting .. sounds like the vehicle may be set up for extreme weather differences..and sets computer to change timing /fuel pressure and airflow accordingly...like a performance chip does... so my guess is they are extremely apart and the one that doesnt work expects opposite temperature and air density making it not run.....other than that the switch or many/any of those settings including the control module may be failing ...do this test for me and advise...while driving in a safe area..switch it over while driving under light acceleration ..then switch back ..and advise me ..thanx and good luck

Fuel system. Check filters and pump. Pump may run, but still not hold enough pressure to run engine as it should. I suggest replacing filters and pump anyway to rule them out as the problem. 95% sure its filter or pump.

1996 mercedes c280 dies when put in drive

Engine stalls or RPM fluctuates at idle up and down or dies near idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

Drive on 1998 mercedes e240 will not engage after 3 - 5 minutes idle

sounds like the fluid level is low or filter needs to be change, either of them will cause the transmission to slip, as the fluid warms up it expands and becomes less dense witch is why you notice it more when cold, but will continue to get worse and eventually ruin the trans.

1998 Pontiac Grand Prix shuts down in Drive or Reverse

When you remove your vehicle from park, the idle air control valve (electronic choke) operates to keep enough air going into the motor while you aren't using the throttle so it will stay running. If it is too dirty it can't move properly...you'll stall.
Pull out and clean or replace the idle air control valve.
