Question about 1979 Pontiac Firebird

1979 Firebird Esprit hard to start and keep running, dies in gear

Once we start the car and let it run in park for a few minutes, we put it in gear and then it dies. We have had a mechanic look into it. One spark plug was not firing and he put an extender on it and said it should run okay . That was a week ago, and now we have the same problem again.

It sounds like timing to me if it dies when you put it in gear.it can idle fine but when you put it in gear and it dies then you have timing problems

I would say change the alternator out. Start with the simplest and cheapest factor first. Without the alternator keeping the engine running its hard to put it any gear.

I would want to know if you have at least 12 volts at the battery posts, and also at the starter. You need to know if the cables are causing the problem, or something else.
Once the engine starts, it should be running off the alternator, but it still needs the battery in the circuit.

Turns off after driving it for a few miles it will turn on again but once I put it in gear it will turn off again have to let it cool off till I could get it running again...

This could be a couple of different problems. You said it dies after it gets warm. Is this just like when you stop at a stop sign? And you say it starts back up but dies when you put it in gear? If you restart it and leave it in park it won't die??? Just dies if you put it in gear? I think it might be your torque converter clutch solenoid.
