Question about 1999 Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

Shrieking noise when driving.

I've got a Dodge Intrepid 2.7L Year 1999. I am getting a shrieking noise when i am driving, some times it occurs when i have just started the car and am pulling away, other times it can happen when i am driving along, its similar to the noise you would associate with a fan belt slipping, but its not this that is the problem. I've been told it could be the AC Compressor but as i am not using the AC i dont know how it could be. If it is the compressor and i need a new one what would happen if the compressor broke completely, would it affect the running of the car. One other thing, if i am driving along and it happens all i do is take my foot off the accelerator for a second and the noise stops. Hope you can help. Nick.

I've just had a power steering belt fitted, would they not have checked the rest of the belts when fitting it.

possibly but one way to know for sure is to buy some belt dressing and spray the belts one at a time to find out which one it is thats sqealing and that will be the one giving you the problem they could have got one belt on too tight or too loose.its hard to tell belt dressing can be bought at any autoparts store

replace belt. the reason that the sound goes away, when the belt warms up and it does not tend to slip as it does when its cold.ultimately the belt has stretched, and is worn out.

1990 Space Cab: I get a shrieking too-tight fan belt squeal on start up and if while driving I press the accelerator hard. Any ideas? chuck Watkins

Fan belt does not squeel because it is too tight. It is caused by slipping. It is either too loose or worn out or both.

L MARK shrieking noise

No, do not spray oil on your belts. Have the belt replaced if that's where the noise is coming from. The squeaky belt could also indicate one of the accessories may be bad. Have who ever replacing the belt check to make sure all the accessory pulleys turn freely.
