SOURCE: Charging problem on 1996 Dodge Ram 3500 Cummins Turbo Diesel

I had the same problem on a 94 dodge with the cummins. It seems the crank sensor that reads from a notch on the harmonic balancer was the problem Without this sensor reading that the engine is running the alternator wont charge. Possibly the same problem with yours

DO U UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF "OUT OF PHASE"?? IT IS THE MECHANICAL TIMING OF THE SIGNAL FROM EACH SENSOR TO THE ENGINE CONTROL COMPUTER, WHAT IS THE CODE? ALSO TELL YOUR DAD (NICELY) THAT ATROUBLE CODE DOES NOT ALWAYS MEANS A FAILED SENSOR, ONLY A PROBLEM WITH THE SIGNAL, THAT CAN BE THE WIRING, IT CAN BE MECHANICAL OR IT CAN BE THE SENSOR, MANY POEPLE DON'T GET THAT AND SPEND TON'S OF MONEY CHASING CODES.I HAVE DONE THIS FOR 35 YEARS AND AM SURE OF WHAT I AM SAYING 100%

SOURCE: a bad camshaft position sensor for a 2.4L 2005 dodge stratus

THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR IS LOCATED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE HEAD. 2 BOLTS AND AN OVAL FLANGE. IT HAS A RED LOCK ON THE PLUG WHICH YOU JUST MOVE TO THE RIGHT TO RELEASE THE MAIN PLUG. BUT I dont know if thats your problem. the timing belt seems to fail on these cars prematurely. Dodge recomends 90,000 miles but many cars bend engine valves before this due to the timing belt. (around 83000-88000) miles. I would reccomend having someone look into this problem first. Also trying this yourself can be costly, simply because the timing belt MUST be installed properly and exactly. If this is not done the engine could be at risk causing expensive repairs. Ihave a friend who had the timing belt replaced by an individual and the i recieved it on a tow truck. Which it now cost them 1600.00 to repair. I have been a mechanic for 15 years. But i got smart and went back to college and npw i am a refrigeration technition. Just trying to help you out. any ? nateboulet@hotmail.com i would be glad to help.

The camshaft position sensor is located on the distributor for all engines designed for the 1998 Dodge Dakota. Accessing the sensor requires removing the distributor cap and the distributor rotor. The camshaft sensor pigtail comes through the front of the distributor and connects to the engine wiring harness above the intake manifold.

Diagnostic code P 340 and P 341 Camshaft Position Sensor Malfunction for a Dodge Ram Diesel 2500. What does it mean?

The Camshaft Position Sensor tells the PCM (computer) the position of the Camshaft Position. This Sensor sychronized along with several other Sensors including the Crankshaft Position Sensor the firing of the electronics to the spark plugs of each cylinder.
It is not difficult to replace and relatively inexpensive.
1. Disconnect the Negative side of the Battery,
2. Locate the Sensor and unplug.
3. Remove the Position Sensor retaining bolt.
4. Pull out the Sensor.
Replacement is reverse of above order.
Hint: use fresh engine oil on the end/sides of the Sensor especially around the rubber o-ring(s) to ease pushing the Sensor into proper position.

I need to replace the crank sensor on my 96 dodge with 5.9 cummins engine it i can not find it

The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) on the 5.9L diesel engine is located (1) below the fuel injection pump. It is bolted to the back of the timing gear housing (7).

1. Disconnect electrical connector at CMP sensor.
2. Remove sensor mounting bolt (6).
3. Carefully twist sensor from timing gear housing.
4. Check condition of sensor O-ring.

INSTALLATION

1. Clean out machined hole in back of timing gear housing (cover).
2. Apply a small amount of engine oil to sensor O-ring.
3. Install sensor into timing gear housing (cover) with a slight rocking action. Do not twist sensor into position as damage to O-ring may result. CAUTION: Before tightening sensor mounting bolt, be sure sensor is completely flush to back of timing gear housing (cover). If sensor is not flush, damage to sensor mounting tang may result.
4. Install mounting bolt and tighten. Refer to Torque Specifications.
5. Connect electrical connector to sensor.
