Left rear brake gradually froze up. Will go reverse but completely frozen forward. Messing with the footbrake has not produced results. brake light is on. Is this a drum/brake problem or a parking bra

Dragging onto pavement did not release. Accelerating did not release. As I said , it will go in reverse. Tried tapping brake with rubber mallet to no effect.

Could it be the Diff? I spoke with my mechanic and he said if fluid out or otherwise it could be the diff. ALSO it hasnt been hammered on yet or tweaked my bad. Would this be a diff issue possibly?

Is the e-brake light on in your dash board?

  • Anonymous Dec 12, 2012

Assuming the big red BRAKE light is parking brake, yes. But the other wheel is fine.

CAR BRAKE PROBLEMS

It can be issue with master cylinder or the problem is there is still some air there in the system that has to be bleed. Or else the parts replaced are not aligned properly/.I suggest everything back.

There are few help links mentioned below to troubleshoot the issue.

SOURCE: I have a 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII. The button that

make sure brake lights work, if they dont the switch may be bad, not allowing you to pull out of park. check fuses also. if the seat motor runs, check if the cable has come loose.

Testimonial: "Thanks, The break lights are not working. we haven't tried to fix it yet but now we have something to start with. "

Hi my front brakes of my Kia k2700 workhorse is binding have replaced the front right caliper and brake pads and done bleeding but left side still binds

Perhaps the left caliper needs attention or perhaps the edges of the pads are binding on wear ridges at the edge of the rotor, perhaps the pads are tight in the carrier or perhaps the footbrake isn't returning enough to produce a clearance between the master cylinder piston and booster pushrod.

Frozen brake fluid in rear brakeline froze caliper

Frozen brake fluid?
Do you live on the shady side of Pluto?
Or did you do the last time a brake fluid full exchange in the Jurassic Period?
Break fluids are hygroscopic (water absorbing). Over time they will come contaminated with water which reduces their boiling point which reduces their effectiveness on hot breaks.
If your break fluid actually froze as you described then it must have absorbed a lot of water as a result of never having been changed over decades.
A full break fluid exchange should be done at least every two years!

While driving a 1999 ford contour, the rear passenger wheel made a loud noise and the wheel froze. Put it in reverse then forward. Slowed down for a speed bump and the wheel froze again. Still frozen.

wheel bearing ?
Was rear wheel bearing making a whomp whomp noise as you have been driving ?
You could have a seized wheel bearing - which is not good to drive on and eventually may lead to wheel being seized onto axle !
Hand brake stuck on ?
Could also be a stuck hand brake from failure of handbrake cable .

On my jcb teletruck the foot brake sticks on untill I rev it quite high Then it shoots off in forwards or reverse .It then works fine untill I apply the footbrake again

sounds like the clevis gear/ pawl is maladjusted, look underneath where the pedal goes through the floor and see if you can find/ adjust the pawl tension

also, could you be accidentally be "setting" the parking brake?

Bought a 1990 Bronco II from one of my troops and somehow he drove it over here. It's a manual transmission as well. But once I put it in first gear, it feels like something is stopping it going forward....

It sounds like you may have a brake caliper sticking (if the issue is really coming from the front). Does it pull in one direction? One way to check is to jack the front end up and try to spin each tire by hand. They should turn relatively freely. Another possibility, and more likely from your description, is that the rear emergency / parking brake may be frozen. Drum brakes, by nature, do a better job of holding the vehicle from rolling forward. If your emergency / parking brake is engaged, either frozen or inadvertently left on, I would expect the symptoms you describe- moving in reverse, but not forward. You can check this the same way- jack up the rear end of the vehicle, put it in neutral, and try spinning the rear tires by hand.

Assuming your vehicle is a 4x4, a less likely scenario is that something's gone awry in the transfer case, front differential, axles, hubs.

Good luck.

Could frozen e brakes cause car not to go forward, car moves easy in reverse

No. An emergency brake on the 86 camaro engages the pads against the rotor and the vehicle would not move either in reverse or forward. It sounds like you have a gear problem in the transmission that could be related to either solenoid or actual gear wear. Assuming the vehicle is being MOVED as you say while the engine is running.. thus providing the energy to move it.. Going in reverse has the solenoid engaged one way, drive the other way. Solenoid sounds damaged at this point. Unfortunately this probably will require a transmission rebuild.

2002 Taurus: I don't drive the car as often as I should, last t...

Your going to need to do some serious brake cleaning.
Every corner needs to come completely apart, clean off all rust, and do whatever is necessary to clean or machine the rotors, clean up pads,if still useable, and properly lube the correct places.
What you have, is neglect and lack of preventative maintenance.

Also the ABS light, is most likely a bad Wheel Speed Sensor,or rust and dirt on it

How do auto reverse brakes on a trailer work?

Forward Braking
The actuating force for the wheel brake is generated during braking of the towing vehicle, as the trailer tends to overrun and
pushes the drawtube in. This force is transmitted to the expander devices in the wheel brakes via the overrun lever, brake rod,
compensator and brake cables.
As a result, the brake shoes are pressed against the brake drum. The resulting friction from contact of brake linings and drum
produces the required braking.
On releasing the brake on the towing vehicle, the drawtube returns to its original position and the brake shoes are released from
the drums by means of the tension springs.
Auto-Reverse
During reversing the drawtube is pushed in and the brake shoes press against the drum (as in forward braking).
When the trailer wheels are in reverse, the reverse rotation, combined with the friction generated from drum and lining contact,
causes the sliding shoe to slide on its carrier towards the adjuster.
This displaces the sliding shoe radially inwards away from the drum. The drawtube may then travel fully to its end stop without
applying further force to the brake shoes and the trailer can be reversed without any difficulties.
Changing direction from reverse to forward travel results in the drawtube being pulled out, allowing the sliding shoes to be
returned to the forward braking position by means of the tension springs.
From this guide which contains more information also.

Emergency brake

I would hazard to guess that the cable is frozen in its housing from rust and moisture, and the light is a random event.  I will gradually slither back to it's rest position in time from vibration alone.  You should go underneath and wiggle the cable to help it return.  If the cable is badly rusted, try to avoid using it until you can shoot penetrating oil down it or replace it.  The cause may actually be corrosion from wetness and salt that the car had before you parked it, and not so much freezing.   Japanese cars from the 80s are notorious for getting rusty, especially their hardware.
