1996 Ford Explorer front end makes noises after putting it in 4wd lo and red lining the engine, whats wrong with it?

Yes transmission

Sounds like a transfer-case problem. It could be an internal gear problem or shift fork binding up or even a broken chain which all require it to be opened up. If it is the electronic version it could be a bad solenoid or loose plug connection.

Whining noise is probably in one of the pulleys or belts. Probably the power steering. And the popping is probably CV axles.

Tis a transfer case issue. Could be shifting fork wear pads worn out which will wear the fork ends to where their bent.

The clunking noise could be coming from three different areas. Either the front or rear differentials could make that noise along with the transfer case. I would initially be looking at the transfer case as the culprit since you mentioned the 4wd light coming and going. My thinking is that the 4wd engagement solenoid is malfunctioning and trying to bring in the 4wd, then releasing it. The only good way to check the function and noise for this is to put the car on a lift.

Easily, belt tensioner bearing, water pump, compressor, idler, take a long wooden dowel, with the engine running, put the tip of the dowel on every bolt, nut, block, part, that isn't moving, watch out you don't hit the fan, and put the other end to your ear with your hand on it, you will quickly find the loudest part. Be careful, Hope this helps.

It sounds to me like the explorer has a bad hub bearing up front.I would have this checked out especially if one has become loose.The hub bearing take the place of what use to be wheel bearings:)

There is a relay that goes out on a lot of fords for the 4 w d .did you check that ?
