Have your front end differential checked. My 2003 Sorento did the same knockin especially uphill and when I took it to the shop after several months of trying to fig it out on my own they said this is a VERY common problem with Kia's. GOODLUCK!!!

SOURCE: How do I change the universal joint in a 2005

the drive shaft is fastened with just four bolts, you need to remove those bolts using a spanner or socket wrench so you could pulldown the shaft and you need to mark the shaft end where it was originally matched up because the shaft is perfectly balanced to avoid vibration while rotating. the universal joint comes with a circlip ring and you need to remove those so you could take out the old uni-joint...hope this helps..

SOURCE: 4 wheel driver not working

I had this happen to mine, and it was a cracked vacuum line going from the transfer case to the hub. Took 48 cents and 15 minutes to fix.

Hi! Yes it can be the transfer case. I strongly suggest that you get one from the junkyard to cut expense plus they can give you a better deal which is more than half the price. HOpe this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

When attempting to start the car it backfires like the timing is off before it did that what hard to keep running no power needed to pump gas to keep going now try to start all u hear ping bang boom

Time to stop trying to start it and have a mechanic check it over....it is either broken or you will break it if you keep trying to start it. Ping bang boom is not what you want to hear...

2005 Ford ranger fx4 transfer case is banging like chain is jumping, replaced transfer case still bangs. Cvc joints ok, differentials ok, rear shaft ok front shaft seems ok. Shift motor seems ok!

If this is a new vehicle to you someone may have put the wrong gear in one end of the vehicle. Also check tire and rims that must be the same front and rear or the travel per revolution of each axle must be the same. Go to discounttire, com and use their tools to find the circumference of the tires.

I have a 2002 ford f150 5.4L 4 door my 4x4 wont work but I can hear my transfer case ingage but it dosent catch can it be my front UJ's?

If it was front U-joints, you would have gotten under there
& checked them, before you came here, not ask us for a
guess

I would say check scan tool data for the transfer case,
then work on that issue

May have a failed encoder motor

Hi ****, Take the vehicle and ask the technicians to inspect the universal joints on the propeller shaft and the gear box mountings. there are also constant velocity joints on the rear diff which should be checked. It would also be a good idea to ask them to inspect the suspension bushings. Regards John

Try commanding the drive ranges while in netural cycling them. This may normalize the controller that senses the position from the encoder motor assembly. There maybe a procedure for that in a service manual.

Front End Problems

first i would check the tires , are they cupped or chopped on the tread? run your hand over the tread and see if it feels rough and uneven. take the truck to a auto repair shop and have them jack both front and rear axles off the ground, put the truck in 2 wheel drive and run the speedometer to the speed you usually hear the roaring noise, if you don't hear the noise , put the truck in 4 wheel drive, turn off the traction assist if it has one and run it to the speed you would hear the noise. if you hear the roaring noise with tires off the ground, the problem is in the drivetrain, (engine, transmission, transfer case, u-joints, differentials or the front left or right cv halfshafts or u-joints). the older models (97 98) had the front two driveshafts from the differential turning all the time, they engaged in 4 wheel drive from the transfer case and a solenoid on the front differential. depending on the miles you have on this truck, the most likely areas i would look at would be the tires, u-joints/cv joints, and front and rear wheel bearings. thanks and good luck.
