I have a mini cooper s and it is overheating. it only does this when i am in traffic and if i dont have the heaters on. I have had the thermastat changed but this has not worked. The Auxhilary fan is working (we did some checks) however it doesnt work by itself. I am at the end of my tether with it now does anyone have any ideas?

There are two stages to the aux fan and if both do not work that overheating often occurs. make sure that you have both fans. let your car idle and listen to the fan. then turn on the a/c and listen to the fan again. first with the car idling you should hear the stage 1 fan but as soon as you turn on the a/c the stage 2 fan should kick on and it should be noticeably louder. If they are working then start looking for coolant leaking.

Clarence, your mini-cooper may just need a new thermostat. if the thermostat in your car is the original, then 4 years is a goodly amount of time for any thermostat to last. Thermostats fail in 2 ways: (A) stuck open, which causes engine to warm really slowly, and (b) stuck closed, causing overheating and causing the heater to blow cold air - since the heated coolant can't get past the closed thermostat to circulate through the heater core (a small radiator-like device used to heat the interior of your car). Your car's thermostat has failed in mode (B). Your cost: $5-$15 at any auto parts store. Project complexity: any handy person could teach themselves to replace a thermostat.

I had this exact same problem -- for about a year and a half! Replaced thermostat, replaced sensor twice, replaced overflow tank, replaced radiator cap, placed a grounding kit on the car in case the problem was electrical ... and was ABOUT to replace thermostat again and then the water pump when a new mechanic suggested we bleed air out of the cooling system. The heater core was PACKED with air, as was the upper hose valve area. Previous mechanic had been using a pressurized fill device to bleed the system and this had just been backing air into the heater core. There are two valves under the hood for bleeding air -- one on the heater core and one on the upper hose. It only takes a few minutes to fix this!
