Question about 2001 Dodge Intrepid

2001 Intrepid Steering console out

Problem: About 6 months ago my steering console controls went out. None of the buttons on my steering wheel are working, my horn no longer works, but would work when locking my car with the remote key. Also my airbag light came on when all those controls went out. So who knows if my airbag will even deploy if needed lol.

I've checked some fuses and found no problems. But I also don't know how to check the bigger fuses.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm a bit of a n00b to cars and what not, but know enough to fix problems with instructions.

I've always wanted to get under the steering wheel to look for something of that sort. But next question would be do you have any instructions for removing all that?

I could never figure out how to disassemble that without breaking something :s

Hello
Your buttons on the steering run threw a clock spring contact pad this is brass many times will loose contact here. disconnect the battery remove the airbag then the wheel, This will expose the clock spring contact points. Give this a good cleaning,

You might try doing a goggle search for pictures etc on the steering . Many manuals have a copy right so cant be copyed.

But i think like easy or something some one might have a service manual for a fair price.

If your mechanically incline at all just take your time lay the parts out as you remove them

there is 4 10 mm bolts for the air bag

then a 18 mm bolt for the steering wheel

your now at the clock spring.

2004 Isuzu Rodeo, Cruise Control will not switch on.

No fuses? In the dash fuse box, check 15A STOP LIGHT fuse CB-6, 15A ENGINE IG fuse CB-12, and 15A BACK-UP/TURN LIGHT fuse CB-14. Then, in the fuse/relay box, check 30A ECM fuse EB-17. The steering wheel switches connect through the SRS coil assembly which may have failed. The ECM may have failed. The vehicle speed sensor may have failed. Other elements of this circuit may have failed

How to remove terrain air bag

How To: Remove your air bag & steering wheel
1. With the car running turn you steering wheel so that the button controls on the wheel are at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock.
2. Turn off the car.
3. Remove the Air Bag fuse #8 from under the back seat, and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Let the car sit for at least 15 minutes
4. Using a flat bladed screw driver insert and twist about 90* while pulling out on one corner that corner of the airbag.
5. Remove all electrical connectors on the back of the airbag and your two steering wheel control buttons. there are a total of 6 connections to be removed.
6. If you only need to replace your steering wheel control buttons you will see two Torx screws on the back side of each control, unscrew and replace the unit and you are done! (after you reconnect everything).
7. To continue on with removing the steering wheel reach for your 21mm socket, and remove the nut.
8. Using a steering wheel puller that has "hooks" at the ends, follow the instructions with your kit to remove the steering wheel
9. Once the wheel is off and you go to re-install, make sure you have it lined up correctly. The steering wheel nut is tightened to 35 foot lbs.

2001 Dodge intrepid steering console

I have done this in dodge a mini van
same set up
disconect the battery
reomve the 4 / 10 mm bolts from the back of the steering wheel for the airbag.
lift the airbag from the wheel.
remove the plug in for the bag.
then there is a 18 mm bolt for the steering wheel nut to remove
then you need a wheel puller to remove the steering from the shaft.
then you will see the brass contacts on the clock spring.
this you Will see built up with hair and dust and will need to be cleaned.
reverse to put back together.
not to many parts.

Airbag light comes on.

Just got my car back from the garage for this exact problem. It started about 3 months ago. The airbag light would go on for no reason. I did notice when this would happen my power windows would not work. All of a sudden it would come back on and everything would be fine. When I took it in the first time the garage coulnt find anything wrong. Then it got cold. Three days ago as I was driving I adjusted my steering wheel and the air bag light came on. Only this time I had my heater on and the heater went off and once again the windows would not work. I moved my steering wheel again and the light went off, the heater came back on and the windows worked again. All of a sudden the airbag light came on and this time it stayed on. Now I had no heat. I took it in and they said for some reason the wires in the steering wheel were being pinched and shorting and this short was had also caused the ignition switch to go bad, which also had to be replaced for the second time in a year. I got my car back, but you can be assured I will not be adjusting the steering wheel. Good Luck.
