My dad bought and old 1996 accord, and the speedometer wasn't working. Our neighbor, who is a mechanic, said that his is a pretty common problem. The problem isn't the sensor, it's the actual speedo, and fixing it requires taking apart the whole dashboard and stuff - nasty business. We just paid him to do it. If I remember correctly, it wasn't too expensive - $60 or something...

So my advice is - make it easier on yourself. Take it to a shop.

You should take the speed sensor back off, make sure that there is a little metal pin, with 2 small tabs on the sides, still inside the bottom of the sensor. This actually turns with the tranny and tells the sensor how fast you are going. I replaced mine once and this pin had fell out, after taking it out, I figured out this pin can easily fall out and then you will have no speed reading from the tranny.

96 honda accord speed sensor not working

I guess you mean the speedometer isnt working? It could be a couple of things. 1. the actual speedometer cable is broke. If electronic it is probly your VSS. typically located on the trans towards the output shaft. You will need to ohm it out and check against spec.

It is the vehicle speed sensor either in the side of the transmission or by the engine. It is a speed sensor issue.

My speedometer doesnt work in my 93 honda accord LX

it could possibly be a wiring problem but your best bet is to just get a different speedometer and hook it up.

Transmission screwed??

You will have to give a little bit of time on this one. The over heating coming up through the vents, sounds like your heater core. Now the temp gauge not working may be a sending unit (which one I am not sure there is three of them). The sports light I have never heard of that before. Now the car stalling and not turning back on could be a few things like, clogged or catalitic converter, or crank shaft sensor just to name a couple. The speedometer working only part of the time is usually the speedometer gauge in the dash but if it don't work at all it's probably a snapped speedometer cable or even a loose one.

Speedometer not working

Does it hang out at 18-20MPH, regardless of your speed?
Mine did the same thing. The problem was an open circuit inside the gauge itself, and there's no repair for the parts. You'll need to get a replacement speedometer gauge, or simply buy a replacement instrument cluster.

If it's not doing the "20mph" thing, then it's possible that you just need a new engine speed sensor. This is located on the rear of the engine block, and is hard but not impossible to reach and replace.

One way to test is to set the car on cruise control when the speedometer is working. If the speedometer cuts out ,but the cruise is still able to maintain your speed, then the sensor is OK and the problem is the gauge. If the cruise control also cuts out, then the sensor is bad.

1996 Honda Accord Speedometer

You, of coarse, have to remove the Instrument panel. There are I bellieve 3 or 4 screws to remove it. All the meters in the Intrument panel are connected electrically by the screws to the PC board. Do you have a replacement one or do you still have to purchase one? I can tell you step by step how to get the dash apart if you want. I had to do this many time with my car. I have a 96 Honda Accord EX. When you have a car like I do with about 200,000 miles on it, I get a lot of practice replacing just about everything inside the vehicle.
