Re: If the temperature guage is not working and engine...
Not really because the thermostat may be fine and the light will still be ON. If the guage is NOT working it will trigger check engine light. First you should fix guage, it probably needs a temperature sensor or sensor wire may be broken. Check it out, good luck.

Bulb is possibly out behind the instrument cluster for the check engine light. As far as the temperature guage not working it sounds like your temperature sending unit is not working if it doesn't move at all. If your thermostat is stuck open it would come up some. If not your temperature sending unit is bad.
Ahh ... the gas gauge / fuel level gauge does not work, either.
Maybe you need to replace the motors that are behind those dials. People are getting charged $300-$500 to have the fuel gauge replaced when the problem really is the little motor - 5 or 6 of them for less than $30. 2003 Buick LeSabre owners are having the same problem with their fuel gauges being erratic.
temperature sensor, should be on the engine, if its illuminated does it light up? is it electrical? check to see if it has power, also check the fuse panel, you can remove the temperature sensor test and replace it, if your not sure how, you can find a link on youtube, or use a chiltons or haynes manual

Engine oil specifications for Peugeot 306 1.6 petrol engine:
1. SAE 5W-40, API SH or SG, for temperatures between -30 Celsius deg. and +40 Celsius deg. 2. SAE 10W-40, API SH or SG, for temperatures between -15 Celsius deg. and +40 Celsius deg. 3. SAE 15W-40, API SH or SG, for temperatures between -10 Celsius deg. and +40 Celsius deg. 4. SAE 15W-50, API SH or SG, for temperatures between -10 Celsius deg. and +50 Celsius deg. 5. SAE 20W-50, API SH or SG, for temperatures between -5 Celsius deg. and +50 Celsius deg.
The gas tank sending unit has a float on it to register the amount of gas in the tank. The float is probably faulty which will cause erratic readings and is a fairly common issue with some GM units. Replacement of the sending unit should resolve that issue. As far as the coolant temperature gauge, it could be a faulty temperature sending unit or a thermostat that is stuck open or someone removed the thermostat. This will cause the engine to never reach operating temperature which in turn makes the engine run rich and can clog cat. converters and destroy some sensors.

A new service API classification category has been adopted. The designation for this category is "SH". The "SH" category is intended to replace the "SG"category and provide improved performance in: deposit control, oil oxidation, wear, rust, and corrosion protection. "SH" category oils may be used in applications where "SG" and earlier categories are recommended.
The appropriate SAE viscosity grade depends on existing climatic conditions. Refer to the temperature chart below when selecting viscosity grades for expected temperature ranges. Brief variations in temperature are no cause for alarm.
Lubricants that do not list both an SAE grade number and an API service classification on the container should not be used.
