Question about 1998 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

New alt new bat wont hold charge

Hello, my 98 GMC Jimmy, has a new battery and alternator, the volt meter on the dash generally stays centered when the truck is running. I have disconnected all extra accessories like fog lights stereo equipment... It will Crank but click as well, I can usually get it running but will have to tap the gas when it first starts to keep it from stalling out. its definitely electrical because I have a new fuel pump as well, and it hold good pressure. Spark is good at the coil, and it has new cap and rotor. before the battery not holding a charge it would randomly crank and crank and crank, but not turn over.. at that point when I gave it some time it would turn right over like it never skipped a beat. NOW, after never finding out what was causing that the battery wont take or hold a charge.

Check your fusible link, tied into positive battery cable, follow all wires from there, could be burnt or melted.

SOURCE: no spark at coil

Check the ignition switch located on the steering column under the dash. If you do not hear an electric contact click when you turn the key on, this could be the problem

Hello I have 1998 nissan altima and my question is, what would cause me to lose all electrical power? No dash lights and wont crank.

Sounds like a failed alternator to me. The alt powers everything when running. If failed the battery takes over, then dies leaving no power source and no start. Charge the battery start the car and put a volt meter across the battery. When running it should read 13.5 to 14.5 volts. If it is reading around 12, your alternator has failed.

I have a 1994 GMC Jimmy 4.3 vortec 4x4 automatic, and the transmission started to slip, then the battery died, we got it home and it wouldn't start, so we charged the battery and it ran fine for abou

You may potentially have an serious electrical drain in your car circuits. The drain is slow and continuous, draining your battery charge even if you do a start. Check the cabling and look for load on your battery with a Volt meter to check for any charge drainage. Check this as a precaution before replacing any more parts.

Can alternator put out 14.2 volts but not enough amps to charge battery and turn off dattery light?

Yes and no.
It sounds like you have a wiring problem.
The alternator output could be 14 volts and only one or two amps, but that would be enough to kill the warning light. Its more likely the alternator is charging but the current is not reaching the battery.

New battery not charging after changing the alternator

First make sure both battery cables are free of corrosion and ground is secured to chassis and engine then check to see if theres an alt. fuse or bat. fuse blown. Another way to test charging sys w\out an meter is to remove the ground terminal from the bat. with the car running, if the alt. is good car stays running, if all else fails take the alt and bat to a parts store that will test them for free

Put in new alternator, shows charging and battery holding charge but battery light stays on. You start car and light stays off for about 15 to 30 sec. than on.

The alt should charge at around fourteen volls , any ways, yogi need to put another battery. A weak alt will kill a good bat.and vise versa

How can i tell if my starter is going bad? I had

It may not be the starter. The battery could have a weak or dead cell in it and not holding a charge.
The alternator could be bad and charging the battery.
If you have a volt meter, or can get one, with the car running, put the leads from the meter to the battery terminals, red positive, black ground.
Put the meter switch to 12 volts. If the meter reads 14 to 15 volts, the alternator is ok, below that it isn't charging. If it does read 14 to 15 volts, replace the battery.
By the way, the starter is ok, or it wouldn't have started with a jump.
It's more a battery/alternator issue. Clean the battery terminals first and see if that makes a difference.

87 toyota camry new battery wont keep charge, alternator checks okay, in dash bulb for charge and brake and lights stays illuminated?

Generally if charge light is on, alternator has a bad diode in it. This lets the charged battery lose its power by flowing in the reverse direction. It sounds as the alt., is either not connected right or is swtill bad

Code 43 . my alt stayes at about 11 12 volts when

CODE 43 IS ELECTRONIC SPARK CONTROL -.KNOCK SENSOR.LOOKS LIKE ALTERNATOR NOT PUTTING OUT ENOUGH VOLTS TO CHARGE BATTERY.YOU NEED 13.5 TO 14.5 VOLTS.CHECK ALTERNATOR FUSE AND ELECTRICAL WIRES.MAKE SURE BELTS NOT SLIPPING.IF ALL IS GOOD.REMOVE ALTERNATOR.LET AUTO ZONE CHECK IT.TO MAKE SURE.TURN OFF RADIO BEFORE MOVING BATTERY CABLES.SO YOU WONT LOSE RADIO CODE.YOUR CAR IS NOT GOING TO RUN RIGHT IF THE ECM DONT RECEIVE 12 VOLTS OR 13 VOLTS.

Alternator and electrical problems ive changed alternator twice, now clicking noise under dash bat. light comes on and dash lights flicker

check all battey connections and system grounds. Check that the battery has 12v and holds properly when load tested. To check charging system, don't disconnect any battery leads...put a volt meter across the battery. when running, you should have at least 12.9v and volts should not drop. (usual reading is generally at or near 13) at idle with all accessories on voltage should be close to that as well. voltage should not exceed 14.Also make sure that drive belt is not slipping.
